The maximum width of Fife, from Fife Ness in the east to its south-western extremity, is 41.5 miles, and its breadth from Burntisland in the south to Newburgh in the north is 21 miles.
Known as the 'Kingdom of Fife', the region has inherited a strong sense of identity that is partly derived from its sea- and firth-girt isolation and partly its historic links with a regional kingdom of the Pictish confederation.
Fife prospered from the 18th century with improvements in agriculture, the expansion of fishing and boat-building and the establishment of large-scale coal mining, textile and paper industries.

 Alcohol Test Purchasing Scheme
A PIONEERING alcohol test purchasing scheme which is being spearheaded in Scotland by Fife Constabulary has recorded 15 failures in its first weekend of operation.
June, for the region of Fife only, allowing the Chief Constable to authorise youths to buy or attempt to buy alcohol for the purposes of determining whether an offence is being committed.
The scheme is aimed at tackling the problem of under-age drinking in the Kingdom's communities and is a major part of Fife Constabulary's Time2Act campaign against anti- social behaviour.

Fife's claim to be the "alien big cat" capital of Scotland was given further credence today when the police confirmed they'd received reports of another sighting - this time on the Rathillet-Cupar road, writes Michael Alexander.
A Fife Constabulary spokesman explained that a 41-year-old Cupar man called the police at around 11.30pm on Saturday after seeing what appeared to be a "large, dark-coloured animal" near to the carcass of a deer.
In recent years, Fife Police have recorded numerous reports of sightings, but no actual proof of a big cat's existence has been found.

The case was raised during the debate by Tricia Marwick, the SNP MSP for Mid Scotland and Fife, who said the joint report had revealed "a catalogue of failure".
"Fife Council and Fife Constabulary's internal report reveals a catalogue of failure - a failure to communicate within authorities, a failure to communicate between authorities, and most importantly a failure to protect a young woman and a community."
