	Fifth Air Force - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
		The Fifth Air Force (5AF), which is based in Japan, is one of the few numbered air forces of the United States Air Force never to have been based in the United States itself.
		In August 1942, under the command of Major General George Kenney, the Fifth Air Force was formed, with its headquarters in Brisbane.
		The Fifth Air Force was the main United Nations air formation during the Korean War.

		Brig Gen Edward J. Timberlake, Fifth Air Force vice commander and later acting commander, suggested a road/truck interdiction effort, which was supported by FEAF headquarters with a goal of paralyzing the Communist transportation system between the 39th parallel and the front lines.
		Air Force leaders were looking for a strong name for the operation and wanted to avoid using the term interdiction in favor of terms that clearly indicated that this was an air campaign.
		Air planners and air commanders had simply assumed through their beliefs in air power that they could interdict the enemy supply levels to the point where the enemy would be forced to negotiate a settlement rapidly and in good faith.

		Prior to September 1947, the USAF was the U.S. Army Air Forces.
		Part of the occupation forces in Japan, the organization responsible for the aerial defense of that country was the Far East Air Forces (FEAF), commanded by Lt. Gen.
		FEAF grew from a force of 33,625 personnel in June 1950, to nearly 112,200 officers and airmen in July 1953.

	Korean War Children's Memorial
		Underwear, children's winter-weight, isn't a normal item of Air Force supply, but the Fifth was able to deliver a stock of urgently needed junior-size "longies" with the speed that typifies the AF's airlift operations.
		Involved in the project were airmen in Korea, Air Force wives at "home front" bases in Japan, and waifs from the rubble strewn streets of Korea's capital.
		Fifth Air Force's first share in the project was an order for children's underwear--$1000 worth.
