The city planners tried to address some of the avenue's problems by enacting, on March 26, 1971, the Special Fifth Avenue District from 38th to 58th Streets extending 200 feet to the east and west into the midblocks off the avenue.
Fifth Avenue's most elegant stretch from 49th to 61st Streets remains very imposing, lively and the best the city has to offer.
What Fifth Avenue in the 30's and 40's needs is an infusion of youth-oriented retail and restaurants such as has transformed much of the Flatiron Districts and NoHo, but whether the markets are vibrant enough to accommodate such an expansion and pay midtown rents is not clear.

Fifth Avenue is built on the same 109.3-inch wheelbase as the new top-of- the-line Imperial, but is shorter, at 198.6 inches to Imperial`s 203.

Fifth Avenue South, Naples, is a six-block long area which served as Main Street from the 1950s into the 1970s.
The Fifth Avenue South Master Plan, prepared by Andres Duany, was adopted in March of 1994, just two months after the creation of the CRA and two months before the redevelopment plan for the larger area was adopted.
The Fifth Avenue South Master Plan recommended changes to the City’s zoning code for the area, as well as changes to the landscaping and parking which existed on the street.

 Profile: The Eversharp Fifth Avenue
But the Fifth Avenue’s hooded design (shown at right, upper photo) meant that the entire length of the nib was clamped rigidly between the feed and the hood’s bore.
The redesigned Fifth Avenue, with a nib that can actually flex quite nicely, can be tuned to write well, but the necessary adjustment would have raised the production cost of the pen unacceptably.
But Eversharp’s use of those early polystyrenes for the Fifth Avenue, advanced though it was, proves to have been less than advantageous for the pens’ longevity.

Fifth Avenue year-round has come to be known as one of the city’s top shopping, eating and drinking destinations, so it’s little surprise that a street fair that actually reflects the neighborhood would similarly attract attention.

If Fifth Avenue sites were to be provided for these new multiple dwellings, it meant that a great many of the first-wave town houses would have to be demolished.
As a consequence, upper Fifth Avenue is noticeably lacking in examples of the Art Deco style of architecture so prevalent along Central Park West and on the Grand Concourse in the Bronx.
Lining the east side of the upper portion of Fifth Avenue today stand 119 structures: of them, twenty-seven are from the first wave, the Gilded Age town-house period; sixty-five are from the second wave, the apartment house era; and another twenty-seven are from the third wave, the high-rise postwar years.

The Midtown Book - 712 Fifth Avenue   (Site not responding. Last check: )
The target of a major landmarks controversy over the preservation of the facades of three small Fifth Avenue buildings, one of which, the middle one, contained Lalique engraved windows, this project is an excellent example of the adaptive reuse of historic buildings.
The Lalique windows were on the second through fourth floors of an otherwise very drab Art Deco building of little significance and for decades their presence was obscured by grime and the fact that they were not very exceptional to begin with.
If anything was wonderful on the Fifth Avenue portion of the site it was the splendid Rizzoli bookstore in the building just to the south of the Lalique property and the Rizzoli bookstore was less than two decades old.

The aristocratic avenue, so long sacred to the resident wealth and fashion of America's metropolis, had for some time been gradually yielding -- with more or less gentle protest -- to the encroachments of business; now it gracefully capitulated.
On the side fronting Madison Avenue the central elevation is of white brick above the second floor, the corner pavilions at each side being of French limestone to the eighth floor.
Large display windows lend distinction to the Madison Avenue corners at Thirty-fourth and Thirty-fifth Streets; and a spacious vestibule, with marquise extending over the sidewalk to the curb, forms a stately and impressive entrance, especially convenient for patrons arriving in carriages and private motors.
