A fifth column is a group of people which clandestinely undermines a larger group to which it is expected to be loyal, such as a nation.
There, fear of the "fifth Column" was used as justification for the mass internment on the Isle of Wight of German nationals resident in the country, including German Jews and staunch anti-Nazis who had sought refuge in Britain after the rise of Hitler.
The term 5th column was also used in the popular 80's V (TV series) referring to a faction of the invading aliens army who opposed their leader's plans and collaborated with the human resistance.

Fifth Column - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-23)
Fifth Column is an all-girl experimental punk band from Toronto, which came about during the early 1980s.
Originally the group had been known as Second Unit, but they took the name Fifth Column after a military manoeuvre made infamous during the Spanish Civil War, in which insurrectionists within the city, called 'the fifth column', aided the four columns (north, south, east and west) outside the perimeters, to better reflect their stance.
A song from their first full-length recording "To Sir With Hate" called "The Fairview Mall Story" was based on true events concerning media publication of the names of men arrested after being entrapped by police and lead to the band being influential in the emergence of the queercore scene.
