Alternately funny and poignant, Fifth of July is "one of the most incredibly well written, profound and moving and often hilarious plays it has every been my privilege to see in the American theatre.
Note: Fifth of July is a sophisticated work intended for mature audiences.

Fifth of July put Wilson on the theatrical map, and was among the first pieces of popular culture that contained gay characters in a work that wasn't about being gay characters.
Most of this cast originated their roles on stage before bringing Fifth of July to television, so what's on view here are seasoned professionals who honed these roles through the most grueling gauntlet a working actor faces — live performances night after night before paying audiences without benefit of camera "takes" or judicious editing.
After Fifth of July moved from Off Broadway to the New Apollo Theater, Thomas took over the role of Ken from a young star on his way to cinematic fame, Christopher Reeve.

If playwright Lanford Wilson were a screenwriter, he would probably have called his superior sequel to "Talley's Folly," "Talley II," instead of "Fifth of July." I'm glad he didn't.
"Fifth..." is more than a sequel, it is an intriguing and penetrating play that needs no numerical suffix for us to recognize its worth and stature as an important American play.
"Fifth of July" is about as far removed in scope and dimension from "Folly" as the author could get.

"Fifth of July" is about as far removed in scope and dimension from "Folly" as the playwright could get.
Wilson's humanitarian theme and his unquestionable gift for complex character development and earthy dialogue make "Fifth of July" a challenge that director Jo Bonney (she recently directed Eric Bogosian's "Humpty Dumpty" at McCarter) meets with mostly excellent results.

This American Playhouse version of Fifth of July pretty much falls between two stools: it's not quite a movie, and it's obviously not a theatrical experience, either.
Image Transfer Review: The intervening years haven't been kind to this version of Fifth of July, but I suspect that it didn't look all that spectacular to begin with.
This disc lacks the spontaneity of a theatrical performance and the vision of a well-made movie, but it provides a palimpsest of what early 1980s state-of-the-art New York theater looked like, and there are a handful of winning performances by familiar actors in unfamiliar roles.
