First World War.com - The War in the Air - Air Aces of World War One
Nascent aircraft technology was quickly and relentlessly developed to produce machines capable of serving each country initially in reconnaissance missions (ideal in conditions of trench warfare) and later in fighter and bombing raids.
The air war threw up a new breed of fighter, and in general the Allied and Central Powers' governments proved quick in exploiting the successes of their airmen for propaganda purposes (although the British were less inclined to trumpet the Royal Flying Corps' achievements, with one or two notable exceptions).
The French government was the first to award the distinction of 'ace' to those of their fighters who had demonstrably downed five enemy aircraft.

Keep in mind there are only four fighters per country and generally they have very different configurations: for example, radial engine vs. inline engine, or single engine vs. twin engine.
The energy fighter will try to minimize this (but watch the head-on shots!) by cutting close to the angles fighter.
Once the angles fighter has come around completely, the energy fighter goes for a shallow climb (make sure you are out of gun range), pulling up using minimum Gs, until completely vertical or even slight past vertical.

 Fighter Ace! Remembering Fred Hillis
He desperately wanted to fly the Bell P-39 "Airacobra" but was too large to fit in the cockpit with a parachute so he flew around the traffic pattern without one, just to say he had flown the P-39.
In England he was assigned to the 9th Air Force in France to a Republic P-47 "Thunderbolt" fighter group.
Though it is difficult to say for certain, it seems likely that on that day Fred Hillis became the only USAAF pilot of the war to make "Ace" by downing an aircraft of the same mission type, design and series as his own machine.

The biggest single seat combat aircraft of World War II and one of the best; the P-47 could tackle escort, fighter sweeps and ground attack missions and performed them better than half the fighters in the air at the time.
The fighter aircraft have their gun emplacements in the correct areas from what I could verify, so again there is accuracy in this game that gives it a nice touch.
But the fighters on the other hand pretty much have cockpits appropriate to their aircraft.
