  F-117A Nighthawk - Military Aircraft
The stealth fighter emerged from the classified world while stationed at Tonapah Airfield with an announcement by the Pentagon in November 1988 and was first shown publicly at Nellis in April 1990.
Although only 36 stealth fighters were deployed in Desert Storm and accounted for 2.5 percent of the total force of 1,900 fighters and bombers, they flew more than a third of the bombing runs on the first day of the war.
F-117 fighters deployed to the Gulf several times during the late 1990's to support U.S. attacks against Iraq designed to deprive Saddam Hussein of his Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) programs and to force his compliance with the UN monitoring regime.

The fighter reserve was designated as a reinforcing force for air combat, the repulsion of the surprise approach of enemy fighter-bombers, covering the withdrawal of friendly fighters from combat and their subsequent landing at their airfields.
Fighters flying in the barrier zone deployed around the edge of the searchlight illumination field so that the pilots would be able to carry out continuous observation of the actions of the searchlights as they searched for the target.
Fighter aviation was normally used on the distant and near approaches to the protected object, and the antiaircraft artillery destroyed the enemy when he was immediately over the object.

 In Defense of Fighters
Fighters and bombers have been magnets for criticism and controversy all through the history of war in the air and never more so than when the bill for enhanced capability comes due.
Scratch the surface of the fighter debate and one of the first problems to arise is the widespread perception that a mafia of fighter pilots is willing to sacrifice other systems and even transformational capabilities to preserve their single-seat cockpits and silk scarves.
Fighters succeeded in the Gulf War because their greater survivability--whether in the form of air combat maneuvering or stealth--gave them the widest range of potential action in the battlespace and because they had the latest technology for precision attack.

Fighters allocated for this purpose independently flew to an area where they were ordered to arrive 3-5 minutes prior to the bombers or simultaneously with them.
Large groups of American fighters, operating as part of the "screen", were easily acquired on radar and that gave the OVA fighters the opportunity to make a surprise strike against the "screen," easily pass through the "screen", and then successfully repel the raids by bomber aviation.
American bombers made wide use of radar, supporting their approach to the target and bombing in heavy weather conditions and at night, as well as the bombers making use of radar jamming sets against gun aiming radar, as well as letting the bombers operate with various incendiary means.

Ground attack aircraft - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
While machine guns and cannon were sufficient against infantry and light vehicles, and one or two small bombs could be easily fitted to most fighters, for operations against tanks heavier weapons such as the 40 mm Vickers S gun or high explosive rockets (such as the RP-3 60 lb rocket) were needed.
By the end of that war the average day fighter was more than capable enough to carry out the ground attack role, and some of the most successful designs were slight modifications of the Focke-Wulf Fw 190 and the unmodified Hawker Typhoon.
Although close air support and interdiction remain crucial to the modern battlefield, attack aircraft are less glamorous than fighters, and both pilots and military planners have a certain well-cultivated contempt for 'mud-movers.' More practically, the extra cost of a dedicated ground attack aircraft is harder to justify as opposed to having multi-role aircraft.
