Fighting game - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Fighting games or fighters are video games in which players fight each other or computer-controlled enemies, usually employing some variation of the martial arts.
Weapons-emphasized games have a plethora of martial-arts weapons (such as nunchaku and shuriken) as well as other types of weapons that are already at the player's disposal or can be found as the player progresses through the game.
The major innovation that in the modern games is the introduction of combo, and versus fighting game style moves to execute various attacks.

Fighting games or fighters are video games in which players fight each other or computer enemies, usually employing some variation of the martial arts.
In this type of fighting game, also known as a brawler, one or more players (most often two, but sometimes as many as six) each choose a unique character, and team up to punch, kick, throw and slash their way through a horde of computer-controlled enemies.
These games are charterized by added depth via a variety of missions, much more gunplay (and fighting abilities that involve guns such as disarming moves), and slow-down/"berserk mode" abilities.

Fighting Fantasy Game Books - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Fighting Fantasy series distinguished itself by the use of a dice mechanic used to resolve combat and other situations, not dissimilar to that used in Dungeons and Dragons and other role-playing games, though far simpler.
In 1984 a number of Fighting Fantasy videogames were released for the Commodore 64, Amstrad, BBC, and Sinclair ZX Spectrum.
The Fighting Fantasy series were the first ever gamebooks to employ a dice mechanic, a random element which contributed hugely to the suspense and the enjoyment of the play experience.

 GameSpy.com - Review
Soul Calibur was more than just a fighting game or a sequel to Soul Blade; it was one of those games that raises the bar for an entire genre and makes people reconsider what games can do.
Fighting games typically incrementally upgrade from sequel to sequel, but the original Soul Calibur absolutely destroyed the memory of its predecessor, PlayStation's Soul Blade.
The addition of weapons to the fighting game mix has put the Soul Calibur series in its own arena; the intensity of clashing blades and the strategies afforded by their behaviors makes the game feel more visceral than any of the other fighters on the market.

The Armchair Empire - Playstation 2 (PS2) Reviews: Dragonball Z: Budokai
Unlike most fighting games where the player really has to come up with combos on their own, here it’s almost as though the combos are repackaged.
This overly simplistic approach to combat then works its way through a number of game modes with the usual practice, story, and versus modes as well as a tournament mode with overly long pre-battle character intros that can’t be bypassed by pounding away on the controller.
All game and anime imagery is the property of their respective owners.

Fighting game amidst the decline - Entertainment
Since the birth of the next generation consoles, there has been a huge decline in the number of fighting games that are available to play on home systems.
There are not many fighting games on the market, so when a game like Capcom vs. SNK 2 comes out, or Soul Calibur 2, it's like a new-born messiah for all fighting fans alike.
Though this is game is worth owning, if you're into 3-D fighters or fighters in general, I recommend renting the game first to try out the first player and multi-player modes.

IGN: Capcom vs. SNK 2 EO Review
Along with a solid, albeit dated fighting game, Xbox owners will have the privilege of playing their favorite Capcom or SNK character(s) against someone thousands of miles away -- or next door, if that's your fancy -- and the experience is more than adequate.
More or less, the difference between the two fighting styles is mainly the availability of certain non-lethal moves such as air blocks, dodging, and rolling, with each groove having its own balanced mixture of the said moves.
The biggest problem that Capcom fighting games face when being ported to a console is the controller issue.

I suppose that this is more of an action game, but since online is one of the categories I suppose that it'd be more relevant that way.
Fighting is resolved as a "fighting game" style combat, that means a typical 3 rounds with a life bar sort of combat.
I suppose that besides the minimal social life involved, the game should be concentrated on the combat part, offering player different combat styles, weapons, even sub-division from each style where they can learn different special moves and develop their characters to their own liking.

The robot will then be dumped into the game arena and must attempt to survive on its own.
This is to preserve the competitive aspect of the game - it isn't expected that the robots themselves will have public source code, in most cases.

Looking at a fighting game from purely from a rendering perspective makes it seem simple in 2D (easy sprite animation), but in 3D it's not as easy (skeletal animation, perhaps with some IK or ragdoll.) The AI isn't that bad, just a state machine, but it can be hard to get right.
