 Figure
Burl-swirl or "Drappe" figure in mahogany was traced to an influence of the strangler fig that creates a swirl figure by forcing frees to develop bulges and a burl figure by penetrating of rootlets into the wood.
Fiddleback figure is regular in occurrence and exhibits a corrugated appearance when woods are split radially Quilted figures are usually irregular and appear as convex intersecting areas on one side and concave surfaces on the other.
A short note on several types of figure in a number of woods citing examples of figure occurring in trees growing in rocky soil, effects of buttressed roots, and other suspected causes of figure formation.

 Wood Inlay text, Section 1
In the inkstand shown in Figure 26, a simple border design turns a plain block or wood into a work of art.
Since inlay work calls for many small pieces and the thin veneer is easily split if not given the proper support, it is advisable to make a special saw board for this work, having a very narrow but deep slot, which provides a good bearing surface all around as in Figure 5B.
The plaque calls for three shades of wood -a light colored wood such as maple for the center design, a dark wood like walnut for the background and the wide outer border and a medium dark contrasting wood such as birch for the wide intermediate border.

 Go Figure
Wood figure, such as the dramatic, glowing waves of curly maple on the green jewelry box above and the striking beauty spots of bird's-eye maple in the sides of the picture frame and the car's body, can turn a project from ho-hum to hoorah.
The very thing that gives figured wood its beauty-grain that twists and turns its way through a board-makes it demanding to work with.
A good approach to machining parts from highly figured stock is to cut all parts slightly oversize, then sand or plane them to finished size.

It also served as a springboard for the acting careers of its two other stars Natalie Wood (in her first non-child 'adult' role) and unknown 16 year-old actor Sal Mineo.
Judy tells a very patient, sympathetic juvenile-offenders officer, Ray (Edward C. Platt), the only truly responsible adult figure (father figure) in the film, that she is experiencing problems with her father who has withdrawn his physical affections and love now that she is older and wears lipstick.
Behind wooden-framed, glass partitions off the lobby, two other middle-class, misunderstood, alienated teenagers are also being held for their anti-social behavior: a pretty, unloved girl named Judy (Natalie Wood) in a bright-red outfit with matching red lipstick, and an emotionally-disturbed, anguished 'orphan' named John ('Plato') (Sal Mineo).

 Figure in Wood
Figure occurs in living trees primarily as variations or distortions in the vertical alignment of wood elements (grain) in either radial or tangential directions (or combinations of both) that result in common figure types known as stripe, blister, curl, wavy, and several variations that are described later in this report.
Figure may be defined as the pattern produced on a wood surface by annual growth layers, rays, and knots; by irregular coloration; and by deviations from straight, regular grain.

Edward, who was still lounging under the rock, was startled by the flashing outline--like a meteor from the heavens--of a human figure, which, in the twinkling of an eye, had cleaved the smooth surface of the lake, sank far into its depths, and reappeared some distance off.
Leaving her guest in mute contemplation of a tiny wood fire in a great fire-place, the young girl ran lightly up the broad, low stairway, pausing at the half-way landing to gaze dreamily from a casemated window out upon the sparkling waters of the lake.
Edward had barely time to be reminded of an unused well, in whose dark, shallow depths his boyish eyes had once discovered a cluster of white water-lilies, languidly opening to the light, when the liquid eyes and lily-like face in the inner vista of this well-like bonnet again confronted him.

 Haruki Murakami - Book Reviews
Norwegian Wood, first published in Japan 13 years ago but only now translated for a western audience, might therefore puzzle the reader who has grown to love Murakami's haunting, melancholy surrealism: its action is resolutely realistic.
Norwegian Wood is probably Murakami's most accessible work, although the plot is both something we've heard a million times before and, well, something we haven't.
But would certainly explain why of all his novels Norwegian Wood is in fact the most readily available, this copy having been picked up in the local branch of a chain newsagent/stationery/bookshop thingmabub which of all Murakami's novels only had this one (as did another branch which I checked after finishing the book).

But in the wood there were powers in wait for her: the troubled hush of a thousand fir-trees; a light so changed, so subdued from its own lively ardour to the dark solemnity of that which it had entered, that the child's spirit, brooding and responsive, went out from her and was liberated.
