Even if it is a very impressive statement overall, Figure 8 isn't quite the masterpiece it wants to be -- there's something about the pacing that just makes the record feel long...
Call it thinking-man's pop from a reluctant star, but Figure 8 is a "grower." However weird it may sound initially, it merits repeated listenings.

Were one to listen to Smith's six albums in order, there's a certain entropic element in the musical progression (not to mention that each record gets progressively longer - this clocks in just shy of an hour - six minutes longer than Figure 8 and nearly twice as long as Smith's solo debut Roman Candle.
Although the album was eventually finished by long time collaborator Rob Schnapf (whose production Elliott had described as "too clean"), the album maintains a density that amazes the most hard to please ears.
Yet Smith's lyrics reveal anguish that after listening to this album (extremely difficult to listen to all the way through with 15 songs at about 57 minutes), you can be hopeful that he is in a better place, away from his private hell.

You might think these considerations would bring a modicum of contentment to Elliott Smith on his fifth solo album, Figure 8.
Figure 8, produced by Smith with Tom Rothrock and Rob Schnapf (Foo Fighters, Beck), sequesters Smith with handmade sounds that last appeared no more recently than the 1960s.
There's another big crescendo in the album's grand finale, "Can't Make a Sound," an anthem of isolation in which Smith wonders, "Why should you want any other when you're a world within a world?" He finds no peace in his solitude, but he's convinced that anything else might be worse.

Needless to say, "Figure 8" doesn't quite live up to what "XO" had the fanship expecting, but it remains a fantastic album.
The album features a couple of bumps in the road, and that was bound to happen in an era that requires the mass production of music in order to keep a label.
And, while some of the worst stuff Elliott has done to date does appear on this album, it also includes some of his best, including a song that everyone will immediately love, unless they go EMO on it, in "Somebody that I used to Know".
