Figurehead - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A figurehead is a carved wooden decoration, often female or bestiary, found at the prow of ships of the 16th to the 19th century.
The practice was introduced with the galleons of the 16th century, although earlier ships had often had some form of bow ornamentation the figurehead as such could not come to be until ships had a head structure to place it on.
As with the stern ornamentation, the purpose of the figurehead was often to indicate the name of the ship in a non-literate society (albeit in a sometimes very convoluted manner); and always, in the case of naval ships, to demonstrate the wealth and might of the owner.

The figureheads of these ancient people were linked to the superstition that these sculptered imeages were guardians of the vessels they adorned and were also supposed to frighten enemies, as well as give a religious significance to the exploits in which they were engaged.
For instance, there are numerous records concerning how the figureheads of new vessels were consecrated by the superstitious with hefty splashes of wine to guarantee that they would give the vessels good luck when they were "launched into their element"--to quote a widely used nautical term of the period.
The high water mark of figureheads was reached during the clipper-ship era dating from the early and middle years of the 19th century.

Last summer, after completing a few Edna paintings, Folsom set out to find his childhood love, and through Roger White, the Smithsonian's car expert, found Edna, as lovely and aloof as ever, on a 1953 Nash.
Folsom's Edna is not nostalgia; she is the artist's plated metal goddess, his "bold figurehead on a ship's prow -- Woman Eternal." Edna piloted Americans and their cars through millions of highway miles, and 46 years later, bolted still to rusted cars in junkyards, she was finally set free through his paintings.
