Robertson, Robbie - The University of the South Pacific
Fiji has been the focus for several studies, including the country's descent into military rule and its declaration of ethnocentrism as a model for indigenous sovereignty (Fiji: Shattered Coups, 1988).
His 1998 study (Multiculturalism and Reconciliation in an Indulgent Republic) documented Fiji's subsequent retreat from exclusivity and dwelt on the importance of civil institutions and principles of citizenship for sustaining reconciliation in societies ravaged by intense social conflict.
Professor Robertson's subsequent examination of Fiji's collapse into unconstitutional governance in and after 2000 (Government by the Gun: The Unfinished Business of Fiji's 2000 Coup, 2001) focused squarely on issues of indigenous rights and affirmative action, indigenousness and governance (especially the assumed dichotomy between tradition and democracy), and economic development and education.
