File format - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Other file formats, however, are designed for storage of several different types of data: the GIF format supports storage of both still images and simple animations, and the QuickTime format can act as a container for many different types of multimedia.
Many file formats, including some of the most well-known file formats, have a published specification document (often with a reference implementation) that describes exactly how the data is to be encoded, and which can be used to determine whether or not a particular program treats a particular file format correctly.
Since files are seen by programs as streams of data, a method is required to determine the format of a particular file within the filesystem—an example of metadata.

Filename extension - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A filename extension is an extra set of (usually) alphanumeric characters that is appended to the end of a filename to allow computer users (as well as various pieces of software on the computer system) to quickly determine the type of data stored in the file.
Filename extensions have been in use for decades, but they have gained common usage because the file systems included with DOS and Windows had severe limitations on filenames for many years.
Mapping filename extensions to content-types is then done using different heuristics, such as examining both the filename extension and the contents of the file.

[No title]   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
File extensions are a mechanism used in some operating systems to denote a computer file's format.
Typically, an "extension" is a series of characters following the file's name, separated by a period.
Thus, to a user who has file extensions hidden, this looks like a harmless text file rather than a computer program written in VBScript.

Filename extension   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
A filename extension or filename suffix is an extra set of (usually) alphanumeric characterss that is appended to the end of a filename to allow computer users (as well as various pieces of software on the computer system) to quickly determine the type of data stored in the file.
This lead to reference manuals being published, devoted entirely to listing the extensions and the type (or types) of data that might be found in files so named.
Therefore, to a user who has file extensions hidden, this looks like a harmless text file rather than a potentially dangerous computer program written in VBScript.

A file extension is the three letters following the dot (.) in a DOS-based filename.
When exchanging files via email as attachments, it is common courtesy to follow accepted standard file extensions.
The primary reason for this is, most recipients will have email software that recognizes these standard extensions and automatically initiates the software needed to view the file based on the extension.

OFF: Default File Extension Added to Filename Using Save As
If you save a file with an extension other than *.doc while this default extension is selected in the Save As Type list, the extension.DOC is appended to the filename that you entered.
The extension that appears in the Save As Type list is appended to the filename when you save a file, even if you enter an extension for the file.
Because of this, if you save a file with a file extension that is not registered in Windows, such as.DAT, the file type is displayed as DAT File.

 Choosing a File Extension
It may help preserve your sanity to use the full file name, but if you omit the extension, you have flexibility later that you wouldn't otherwise have.
You could change the extension to.txt, so it's routed through the content management system before serving, or you could change it to.opml so you could use an outliner to edit it (and also route it through the CMS).
By not including the extensions in the URLs, you preserve your options for the future, and save a few characters in your content at the same time.

Microsoft Internet Explorer versions 5.01, 5.5, and 6.0 could allow a malicious Web site operator to spoof file extensions in a download dialog box to cause an executable file to appear to be a file type that is safe for opening.
If a user clicks on a link to download an affected file and then chooses to open the file from its current location, the file would be executed without displaying a warning.
CVE-2001-0875: Internet Explorer 5.5 and 6.0 allows remote attackers to cause the File Download dialogue box to misrepresent the name of the file in the dialogue in a way that could fool users into thinking that the file type is safe to download.
