Filet lace - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Filet lace (also known as Embroidery on Knotted Net, Lacis, Filet Brodé and Poinct Conté) is a Needle lace created by darning on a ground of knotted net, netting.
Filet lace is a form of decorative netting and as such can be presumed to have derived at some point from the netmaking that a fishing community would require.
Filet Lace is typically created in a single color of thread, usually white or ecru.

All laces share the characteristics of an open fabric and that they are not worked on a basic fabric or the basic fabric is fully removed after completing the lace.
On the basic threads lace stitches were executed to fill in gaps, they were reinforced by additional threads to make a dimensional appearance etc. The temporary stitches and the pattern were removed when the lace was finished.
Bobbin lace was originally an imitation of needle lace, but when certain types of bobbin lace were en vogue the same happened to needle lace: it tried to emulate bobbin lace.

LINEN STITCH is the most forgotten of the basic stitches used in Filet Lace: it is the weaving of the thread with the knotted net to form a cloth.
Filet Lace is traditionally made on a square knotted net, a fine fishing net with a knot in each corner.
Her first encounter with Filet Lace was a torn little placemat belonging to her late French grandmother: "This technique was a mystery for me and I didn't even know the name.

Unlike filet, in which netting merely provides a ground for needle-worked patterns, the net structure itself in Armenian lace is decorative.
Many bobbin laces have been based on bobbin-made braids, but when commercially manufactured tapes of various sorts became available, imitations could quickly and easily be produced by people with minimal skills.
In the tape lace piece shown here, the designer combined three different commercial tapes, curving, folding and sewing them together to make leaves and rosettes; then she bridged the spaces between with thread bars.

Filet Lace is sometimes put into the group of the Real Laces.
Today the crocheted imitation of Filet Lace is better known than the real thing, which is much finer than crocheted filet.
Filet is very delicate, because the size of only one thread makes the basic element of the work, not several as in other lace techniques (crochet = 4 threads - loop inside of loops; tatting = 2 threads - knots over a central thread, bobbin lace = 2 threads - a twisted pair of threads).

A couple of days ago I mentioned a stitch which I apparently invented, one which resembles filet crochet--which is to say that even though it's worked with yarn-overs, the holes are perfectly square.
The filet pattern is as follows: Over an odd number of stitches; Row 1 (RS): K2, *yarn over, knit-through*; work between *s to last st, K1.
Remember that it opens up enormously, so you must either cast on _very_ loosely or cast on twice as many stitches as you need and then P2tog loosely across the row before you begin working the pattern; otherwise, the cast-on edge will bind unattractively.
