Born into a prominent Florentine family, Filippo Baldinucci received a Jesuit education and hoped to pursue a religious career.
Best known as a writer, Baldinucci's most important publication was the fundamental Notizie de' professori del disegno da Cimabue in qua (Notes on teachers of drawing from Cimabue until now).
Baldinucci's well-informed biographies of Italian and northern European artists comprise the first universal history of European figurative arts, expanding and increasing the accuracy of Giorgio Vasari's Lives of the Artists.

Filippo Baldinucci (1624– January 1 1696/7), was the most significant Florentine biographer/ historian of the artists and the arts of the Baroque period.
For Cardinal Leopoldo de' Medici (1617-1675), brother of Ferdinando II de' Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany and a scholar and patron of the arts, he began as bookkeeper in 1664 and developed, after the Cardinal's death, into virtually the curator of the Grand Ducal collections.
From this grew his Notizie, in which he consciously intended to build upon the Vite of Giorgio Vasari; Baldinucci's was the first art history to trace the lives and work of artists not only of one region (Vasari was predjudiced towards Tuscan artists) but all Italy, and indeed beyond.
