Filk is a musical culture, genre, and community tied to science fiction/fantasy fandom, active since the early 1950s if concentrated primarily since the mid-1970s.
One definition focuses on filk as a genre: filk is folk music, usually with a science fiction or fantasy theme.
Whichever definition one chooses, filk is a form of music created from within science fiction and fantasy fandom, often performed late at night at science fiction conventions, though there are now dedicated filk conventions in Canada, England, Germany, and the USA.

There are as many definitions and philosophies of filk music as there are filkers (those who sing it), and those definitions and philosophies tend to evolve over time.
Many filk songs have original words or music or both, but are based on or inspired by a published fictional world, such as Star Trek or Pern or Babylon 5 or Dr. Who or Dorsai or Middle-Earth.
Filk songs do not have to be related to SF or fantasy.

According to "An Egocentric and Convoluted History of Early 'Filk' and Filking" by Lee Gold, the word "filk" was born as a typo in an early 1950s essay submitted to a fanzine about the influence of science fiction on folk music.
Jane Mailander's "Filking 101" says that Weird Al Yankovic's song parody "Yoda" (of the Kinks' "Lola") and Elton John's original tune "Rocket Man" (based on a Ray Bradbury story) qualify as filk songs even though they are not folk songs and the artists are not folksingers.
Though filk concerts may be the program highlights, you'll find the soul of the scene in filk circles.

Within the filking community this criteria is the basis of a sub-grouping called "found filk", which is songs with strong filk content that originate from outside of the community.
A song that has no substantial filk content, and is not by a member of the community will be rated as more filkish by most members of the community if it happens to be written to a borrowed tune.
