The back focal distance of the lens is officially the distance from the last element of the lens to the focal plane, that is the plane where the lens focusses its rays.
That is the amount by which an image plane may be shifted horizontally with respect to a reference plane (film emulsion or tracking rails or back focus) before the image blur becomes unacceptable.
If we would allow the film to be located away from the bayonet flange, the sharpness plane may not or just touch the front of the bulging film and a greater amount of unsharpness would be the result.

BRONICA S2A, S2, C - FLAT FILM PLANE AND SHARPNESS
Film flatness all across the format must be maintained to much less than the 0.005 inch tolerance*.
All kinds of film bulging and rippling was noted, indicating these backs did not produce a flat film plane and at wide apertures unsharp images would result.
The film in the back's aperture was rippling badly and pressing a finger against it allowed me to push the film down against the pressure plate, indicating it was bulging badly - not a flat film plane.

 Film Secrets - Film Lingo
The original film that is used in the camera, from which a positive print is made for editing.
The shutter in film cameras is a circular disc that changes in shape to increase or decrease the exposure of the film.
The t-stops are calibrated to the actual amount of light that is hitting the film, rather than arrived at mathematically, as is the case with f-stops.

Pinhole: curved or flat film plane?   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
The curved film plane would help with this second problem, so if you are having light fall-off problems, you might want to consider the curved version.
For a flat or spherical film configuration, this relation is the same for horizontal and vertical distances off axis, while for a cylindrical film shape, the relation is different horizontally and vertically.
If the film is spherical with a radius equal to the focal length (the pinhole to film distance), than the light always arrives perpendicular to the film and always travels the same distance.

Film Flatness Issues   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Film flatness is surprisingly critical in determining the overall camera performance - especially lens resolution or sharpness (as measured by lpmm) and lens contrast.
Film flatness in medium format is different from 35mm film, since rollfilm doesn't have the cartridge lips of the 35mm film cassette to cause warping problems.
Even with new film holders and without film, the depth of the "film plane" is not easy to measure since the plastic of the film-holder is sloppy, so the depth varies across the surface of the aperture.

Slit-Scan Photography with Large Format Cameras
A very famous photograph that depends on focal plane shutter distortion for its visual impact is one made by Henri Lartigue with a large camera equipped with a focal plane shutter.
Another photographer who took advantage of the characteristics of focal plane shutter distortion but in a more controlled way was Robert Doisneau who photographed a couple spinning on a turntable as a slowed down focal plane shutter exposed the scene sequentially from one edge of the film to the other.
It turns out that the reason for this is that most focal plane shutters traverse the film plane quite quickly in relationship to the speed at which the images of most subjects move along on the film.

Large format photography: cut film holders for 4x5
The size of the film is different, therefore the holders are too, however, the exterior dimensions of the holders are the same so you don't have to modify the camera.
I've gotten dust on the film, and finally concluded that it was dust on the pressure plate, transferred to the film on the other side from the exposed film.
When film is scanned, which is probably a compromise in itself, and the film image plane was already compromised by inaccuracy or unevenness, then the digital to film comparison is going to be even worse (than if the film image was made with a totally flat and accurate plane).

American Experience | Ansel Adams | Special Features
The film plane is the place within the camera where the ground glass and a sheet of film alternately sit.
It sits at the film plane when a film holder is not in the camera, and the lens projects the image onto it -- upside down.
When a film holder is inserted in the camera, it displaces the ground glass, holding a sheet of film at the film plane -- in the same position the ground glass occupied during focusing.

Ground Glass and film plane alignment - how is fresnel lens thickness taken into consideration?
Bill says "It appears the film holders and ground glass are not consistently off in any one direction..." It could be that the holder or GGS is twisted (in which case it should be trashed).
In manufacturing cameras an d film holders, one overriding concern is the correct position of the focal surf aces of the respective parts.
In the film holder this would be the position of t he septum, against which the film rests, and in the camera this would be the pos ition of the diffusion surface, or ground side of the ground glass.

Measuring depth of groundglass and film plane
The chances of a 0.2mm shift of the film plane when inserting a film holder, especially on field cameras, is quite high.
Now stick in a film holder with a sheet of film in it (or an old negative you don't cherish) and do the same measurement after pulling the dark slide.
The ANSI spec for 4x5 film holder depth is.197" +/-.007 Taking into consideration that the ground glass and the aluminum plenum in a film holder both exhibit a certain degree of compliance, you can only make meaningful measurements of their depth with a precision depth gauge and specially designed, surface ground, chromed steel test fixtures.

The problem is, after you advance to frame 2, the film currently in the gate had been sitting on the reverse-curling feed roller while you were working on frame 1.
Only the film plane of the holder, when inserted in the back, must be coincident with the gg.

Enlarging Minox Negatives - Curved Film Plane?
I understand that the early Minox camers had curved film planes and the Minox enlargers have curved negative carriers.
As I understand it, the major reason to have curved film planes is to match the field curvature of the lens.
If the lens in question was intended for a curved carrier, then it should be sharper with a curved carrier, so the main criteria would be match the lens with the carrier it was originally used for, rather than matching the camera to the enlarger.

Because of the difficulty of measuring from the nodal point, this distance is usually the film plane.

There's also a romance between Nashawn (Kevin Hart) and Giselle (K.D. Aubert, who is stunning by the way) which is dull and contrived not bearing any originality what so ever, which also contributes to the inevitable ending.
Even when you stop thinking about how terrible the movie is and you think something interesting is going to happen-- you immediately get stabbed in the back with something very dull.
