 Film History Before 1920
The Kinetoscope, the forerunner of the motion picture film projector (without sound), was finally patented on August 31, 1897 (Edison applied for the patent in 1891).
The six-minute narrative film combined re-enacted scenes and documentary footage, and was dramatically edited with inter-cutting between the exterior and interior of a burning house.
The film also included exterior scenes, chases on horseback, actors that moved toward (and away from) the camera, a camera pan with the escaping bandits, and a camera mounted on a moving train.

Preserving Very old Memories by converting film to DVD
Projectors exist that play both formats, but these projectors tend not to have the playback quality of a machine that’s dedicated to a specific film format.
Additionally, dual format projectors tend to be hard on standard 8mm film, because standard 8 mm film is designed to use tractor feeds for pulling the film through the projectors.
Since a film projector doesn’t have any video out jacks, I had to project the image from the film, and then use my digital camcorder to record the movie as it was being played.

Not to be confused with a later print film also called Kodacolor, this 16mm film achieved color motion pictures with the use of a process first devised in 1908 by Albert Keller-Dorian, improved by Berthon, thence know as the KDB process.
The system used 8mm film, provided to the consumer as spools of 16mm film, to be exposed on one half of the film at a time, the spool then turned over and the other half exposed.

 The Film Projector
The film projector went to my brother, who was four years older than me; I was given a bear that could growl.
It consisted of two spools for sixty metres Of 35-mm film, a steady feeding mechanism (Maltese cross and crank), a sector and a fairly large lens in shining brass.
The loop was brown and had a pungent, rather sweet smell; like all film at that time it was made on a nitrate base and was frightfully inflammable.

On the other hand, film (whether that be super 8 or 16mm or whatever) has a greater degree of colour saturation that video - though that depends on the particular film stock used.
Additionally, film has greater exposure latitude then video - this of course depends on the type of film stock used as well - and if you are using negative or reversal film.
Though smaller film sizes like super 8 do not seem to handle contrast as well as larger film sizes.

During the transfer, you'll use a film projector to display the footage and a DV camera to videotape it.
Unless you synchronize the film projector and the camera, the resulting video is going to flicker, because some of the fields will catch one of the projector's shutters in operation, and those fields will be darker than the rest.
If it doesn't, set the white balance to indoors or incandescent, even if the film you'll be converting was shot outdoors; even though the landscape in the film may have been sunlit, the predominant light in the image you're actually recording is produced by the tungsten incandescent bulb in the projector.
