 Film Speed
Speed is how fast a film can capture an image when exposed to a minimal amount of light.
It is also great for taking pictures in bright sun using a slow shutter speed like 1/30th second to emphasize motion blur or to force the depth of field in a photo to be made less sharp or simplified.
The film tends to have contrast problems because the detail in shadows will drop out while the highlights become a dominant part of the photo under low light conditions where reflected light is minimal.

Film Speed is another variable in the exposure equasion.
The film speeds translate into a full stop of exposure (just like aperture or shutter speed.) For example ISO 200 is 1 full stop faster then 100 speed film.
The film now is a lot better then it was a while back, even ISO 800 is very good for 4x6 prints in lower light settings, but the grain will become obvious in larger prints.

ISO film speed is the focus of this Photos@VectorTrust.com published aricle on photography "How to" subjects.
Films are made for different applications, so a more sensitive film has a higher ISO number or rating.
As an example, a consumer ISO 200 speed film is twice as sensitive to light as the ISO 100 film (from the same manufacturer) If you use ISO 200 film, it requires half as much light to make a correct exposure as ISO 100 film.
Choosing the "right" film ISO speed is a constant balance between a fast ISO speed film (needed to better control shutter speed) and a film’s grain quality (which determines the sharpness and fine detail.in the final photographic print).

The Photo Pro - Photography Tips About Film Speeds
100 speed film is a good choice for shooting outdoors in bright sun, or inside with a flash.
200 speed film needs less light than 100 speed, and it is a little less sharp, but it still produces good quality enlargements.
Speeds of 1000 and 1600 are the most common, although 3200 speed film is available.

 Silent Film Speed
The historical fact is that more silent films were intended to be shown at speeds which were much closer to the sound projector's 11 minutes 6 2/3 seconds per reel than the legendary "silent speed" of 16 frames per second which drags the film along at sixteen minutes and forty seconds per reel.

Film Speed   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-19)
The speed rating system, maintained by the International Standards Organization (ISO), is most commonly expressed in multiples of 100 (100, 200, 400, 1000), though there are other values available, such as 25 and 50.
A film rated at ISO 200 requires half the exposure time as one at ISO 100, but twice as much time as an ISO 400 film (assuming all other values, such as ambient light and the camera's aperture setting remain constant).
Slower films have a finer grain and are therefore capable of producing photos of greater detail.

 How Photographic Film Works
A slow speed film is desirable for portrait photography, where you can control the lighting of the subject, the subject is stationary, and you are likely to want a large print from the negative.
The film speed is the first factor, and most of today's cameras automatically sense what speed film is being used from the markings that are on the outside of a 35 mm cartridge.
So, either manually, or automatically, you now have an image that is focused on the film surface, and the proper exposure has been set through a combination of film speed, aperture settings (f stop) and exposure time (generally fractions of a second from 1/30th to 1/1000th of a second).

 FILM SPEED
Aerial Film Speed and Effective Aerial Film Speed should not be confused with ISO speed or exposure index (EI).
When using ground pictorial films that are assigned an ISO speed, such as Vericolor, Ektachrome, or Technical Pan, you should conduct tests to determine which film speed settings for your camera or light meter will produce optimum results.
Filters used with color film are usually colorless or pale pink, such as a No. IA Skylight filter, or one of several densities of pale yellow (No, 2B and 2E, for example).

UtahWest Photographics - Basic Photography Course
Film is a strip or sheet of light sensitive material which must be exposed to light to make an image.
With manual cameras and exposure meters, a meter reading is taken of a scene and a shutter speed and aperture are indicated for the proper exposure of the film being used.
Higher speed films require less light to be properly exposed but they do not yield prints with as high quality as slower films due to the grain being larger in the faster films.

Film speed - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In the ISO logarithmic scale, which corresponds to the older DIN scale, doubling the speed of a film implies adding 3° to the numeric value that designates the film speed.
Four variables are available to the photographer to obtain the desired effect: lighting, film speed, f-number (aperture size), and shutter speed (exposure time).
The equation may be expressed as ratios, or, by taking the logarithm (base 2) of both sides, by addition, using the APEX system, in which every increment of 1 is a doubling of exposure, known as a "stop".

KODAK PROFESSIONAL High Speed Infrared Film is a high-speed film with moderately high contrast, sensitive to light and radiant energy to 900 nanometres (nm) in wavelength.
Infrared films are sensitive to infrared radiation, some ultraviolet radiation, and to all wavelengths of visible radiation (light).
To enhance the infrared effect on the film, you must use a filter over the lens (or light source) to absorb the ultraviolet radiation and blue light to which the film is also sensitive.

If you ask "how much light must fall on the film before it is transmitting 1/100th of the light (density 2.0)?", you can see that this happens for the ISO 200 film at about a log lux-seconds of -1.8 (that's 10^(-1.8) or 0.016).
The ISO speed on the side of the film box tells you roughly how sensitive to light a film is. But it is merely a summary of the information that is available in a sensitivity curve.

The Minolta Dimage Scan Speed film scanner is quite a bit more capable than some of the "personal" film scanners we've reviewed in the past, positioned at the upper end of the "enthusiast" market with a list price as of this writing of $1,299.
Given the extreme resolution of most film scanners, we're surprised that the lenses can be designed with enough depth of field to insure sharp focus in the face of minor variations in the film plane position.
The Dimage Scan Speed uses plastic slide- and filmstrip-holders to carry the film to the scanner: You first place the media to be scanned into the holder, then insert the holder into the scanner.
