General film song is known as filmi gana, distinguishing it for example from filmi qawwali, an immensely popular, secular form of Qawwali (which see), the devotional Muslim music.
Film was brought to Bombay in July 1896 by the LumiŠre Brothers, and it would be impossible to overestimate the impact of it; 'pictures' (as films were known) became far and away the dominant cultural medium, ousting trad.
Filmi has influenced the popular music of many countries, reaching audiences wherever subtitled Indian films are shown, whether Egypt or Israel, Germany or Ghana, Myanmar (Burma) or Trinidad.

GHAZAL : MusicWeb Encyclopaedia of Popular Music   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
The roots of ghazal can be traced to what in Western terms would be pre-mediaeval Persia, for by the seventh century ]sc[a.d]/sc[.
It customarily concentrates on love poetry in all its senses: sacred-profane, mystical and spiritual; during the 20th-century ghazals (songs in ghazal form) embraced political and ethical subject matter, and therefore became the well from which poets such as Ghalib, Mir and Faiz Ahmad Faiz would draw inspiration.
However, in a place which sets a premium on the recognition of and respect for antiquity, the ghazal form is astonishingly robust, relevant and adaptable, and it also has profoundly inspired the popular and poetic music of other regions.

Ghazal and qawwali music can to some extent be considered forms of Hindustani classical music in that they make use all of its main features (raag, taal, etc), styles, and many of the musical instruments associated with it (sitar, tabla, harmonium, etc).
Many Pakistani musicians of other genre (particularly ghazal, qawwali and folk musicians) therefore are nonetheless trained in Hindustani classical, and often belong to a gharana.
Ghazal is the name of a poetic form, but musically ghazal gayaki refers to the form of music in which the poem is sung.

Lyric Poetry in Urdu: the Ghazal, by Shamsur Rahman Faruqi and Frances W. Pritchett
Within the ghazal, the poet almost always adopts the stance of a romantic hero of one kind or another: a desperate lover intoxicated with passion, a rapt visionary absorbed in mystic illumination, an iconoclastic drunkard celebrating the omnipotence of wine.
The ghazal universe exists in the consciousness of ghazal poets and their audiences, who construct it by knowing verses, and constantly refine it by making, hearing or reading, accepting or rejecting, yet more verses.
The human inhabitants of the ghazal universe are stylized, and exist chiefly to fulfill certain necessary functions: the lover’s friends, his confidant, his rivals, his messenger, the beloved’s cruel doorkeeper, the Shaikh full of reproachful and ostentatious piety, the Advisor with his unheeded words of caution, etc.

His rendition of Jalte Hain Jiske Liye was what made him the most sought after playback singer in Bollywood, and Naushad, Ghulam Mohammed, Khayyam, O P Nayyar, Shankar-Jaikishen, S D Burman and Anil Biswas were among the noted music directors he worked with.
When it came to the filmi Ghazal, there was no one in his class, until Mehdi Hassan and Ghulam Ali would steal his crown.
With his tender, usually soft-hearted renditions of the usual pledges to unrequited love were the stuff of legend, and music director Anil Biswas probably hit the nail on the head when he described Mehmood's voice as 'wine poured into a goblet'.
