The house, garden and grounds are breathtaking and it is certainly one of the most elaborately embellished estates in the (North American republic containing 50 states - 48 conterminous states in North America plus Alaska in northwest North America and the Hawaiian Islands in the Pacific Ocean; achieved independence in 1776) United States.
Filoli was built by William Bowers Bourn II and his wife, Agnes Moody Bourn and served as one of their residences from 1917 to 1936.
Filoli has served as the backdrop for many (The film industry of the United States) Hollywood (A form of entertainment that enacts a story by a sequence of images giving the illusion of continuous movement) movies.

It was arranged by William B. Bourn, President of the Spring Valley Water Company and owner of Grass Valley's Empire Mine.
Bourn was a patron of Polk's for whom Polk designed many projects, including the aforementioned 2550 Webster and also Bourn's country estate Filoli on Cañada Road in Woodside.
Much later Filoli was made famous as the Carrington house in the television series Dynasty.
