Filter feeder - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Filter feeders (also known as suspension feeders) are animals that feed by straining suspended matter and food particles from water, typically by passing the water over a specialized structure, such as the baleen of baleen whales.
Filter feeding is one of the four major types of feeding.
Such filter feeding organisms are the reason that much of the materials we throw in the oceans comes back to us in our food.

Building a Better Mouth Trap - Filter Feeding
Filters of the first category are relatively coarse, being composed of modified dermal denticles (placoid scales), and are found in two cold-water species, the temperate Basking Shark and the deep-sea Megamouth Shark.
Filters of the second category are finer, composed of pinkish-brown spongy tissue arranged in flattened, horizontal plates that bridge the 'gaps' between successive gill bars.
This category of filter is found in the Whale Shark and the Manta and Devil Rays, which inhabit primarily tropical to warm-temperate seas with relatively thin plankton biomass.

 Harmonic Filter Bank Protection
An upstream feeder breaker or an integral roll-out vacuum circuit breaker within the metal-enclosed filter bank will provide current interruption for faults on the line side of the capacitors and may eliminate the requirement for the main-disconnect fuses and switch.
The thermal relay(s) should be wired to trip the filter bank by either the internal filter bank vacuum switches switches (for multi-stage banks with independent stage protection) or the upstream circuit breaker.
If relays are to be used, they should be wired to trip the feeder breaker or the next upstream device since most filter bank capacitor switches (either oil switches, vacuum breakers, and vacuum contactors) are not rated to interrupt fault currents.

 Grazing Rate Experiment
Raptorial feeders capture relatively large prey on a one-to-one basis, while filter feeders remove small prey from the water by pumping water through a filter usually composed of comb-like rows of flagella.
The best would be to make a general model for the relationship between rate of feeding and prey density for a filter feeder, and to then examine the fit of the expected function to the data.
Key idea: If filter feeders are non selective, and if their rate of feeding is not limited by internal processes (assume here that it is not, unless your data indicate otherwise) the rate of feeding should be proportional to prey density.

It definitely did not walk like a duck, and it probably did not quack like one, but a bird-like Mongolian dinosaur called Gallimimus probably ate like a duck, filtering water through a sieve-like structure in its beak.
Ducks have similar comb-like filters at the sides of their beaks.
He believes the long-legged Gallimimus waded into shallow water rather than swam, and ate small floating animals and plants like a flamingo or a shoveller, a type of duck.

The basking shark is a planktivorous (plankton eating) filter feeder, just like the whale shark and the megamouth shark.
Unlike the whale shark and the megamouth shark, Megachasma pelagios, that can actively pump water through their gills by gulping, the basking shark is solely depending on the passive flow of water for ingesting its food.
To be able to support its huge body with energy the basking shark has to filter a lot of water.

Relative strengths of competition for space and food in a sessile filter feeder.

To determine this, the density and position of barnacles (Balanus improvisus) in a unidirectional current were manipulated to alter the amount of competition for space and food, respectively.
