  Photography - MSN Encarta
Filters added to the front of a camera lens change the quantity or quality of the light that reaches the film.
In a landscape photograph taken with a red filter, for example, much of the blue light of the sky is blocked, causing the sky to appear darker and thereby emphasizing clouds.
The medium-yellow filter is often used for outdoor fl-and-white photography because it renders the tone of a blue sky in much the same way as the human eye does.

Photographic filter - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The filter can be a square or rectangle shape mounted on a holder accessory, or, more commonly, a glass or plastic disk with a metal or plastic ring frame, which can be screwed in front of the lens.
Filters are commonly used in fl and white photography to manipulate contrast.
Aluminum filter rings are much lighter in weight, but can "bind" to the aluminum lens threads they are screwed in to, requiring the use of a filter wrench to get the filter off of the lens.

Filter options for digital cameras   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-31)
The much more common round filters are generally better suited for everyday use, but square filters have their virtues, particularly when it comes to special effects to be applied to only part of the camera's field of view.
Filters reflect a small amount of incoming light out of the camera and invite the unwelcome internal reflections known as flare.
UV photography is the out-of-spectrum path less trodden—in part because the challenges are much greater than those encountered in IR work, and in part because UV images often lack the gripping appeal typical of IR images.

 Action Infrared Photography
Action photography with fl and white infrared film while probably never practiced to a great degree by photographers in general has, in my opinion, very nearly diappeared from the present day photographic scene as a result of the popularity of the SLR camera.
Reflected infrared photography is usually accomplished by using readily available light sources (the sun, incandescent light bulbs, and electronic flash are all good sources of IR rays) and taking the photographs after placing an infrared filter over the camera lens just prior to making an exposure.
The filter is held in place by small pieces of thin adhesive tape such as Scotch tape, attaching the filter to the body casting on each of the narrow ends.

 ULTRAVIOLET and INFRARED Photography Summarized
The filter does not allow the sky color wavelengths to pass on to the film and thus the sky is rendered clear on the negative and dark on the print.
The barrier filter should be a deep red or infrared filter such as the 87 or 87C.
The filter which limits the incident energy to a desired spectral region is known as the "exciter" filter.

The various minolta/cokin filters and finally the gel filters are useful adjuncts, but the gel filters have a problem with scratches in heavy use, and are a pain to use outside of the studio in my experience.
The filter breaks and the shards of glass are gashed into the front of the lens, ripping big gouges in the lens coating.

I can't speak to the photography MFA, but a writing MFA is most useful for giving you the time and opportunity to focus on your writing--and for developing connections with other writers.

Graduated Neutral Density Filter - Photography & Digital Camera Forums
I've used a variety of Cokin graduated filters (neutral density and colored) and have never found a situation where a hard-edged version was better.
These filters tend to get scratched easier than most because there's no frame, and you won't worry so much about just taping the filter to the lens barrel with a really wide angle lens.
One thing too with hard edged filters: I tried using my Singh-Ray hard stepped ND on my Sigma 10-20mm lens and at closer than infinity focusing distances and f/16 or slower, the filter (in a Cokin mount) actually falls within the DOF of the lens and looks pretty bad with such a harsh transition.

 FL-D 49mm Photography Filter
It is a common photographic filter used to enhance the light curve on subjects lit under flourescent lighting while utilizing daylight film emulsions.
The most important and unusual aspect of the filter is the seemingly miraculous way it brightens and yet increases the contrast of the surface features on Mars.
The only problem is the 49mm filter will only work on a 2" barrel EP with a step down 49-48mm ring and no Barlow.

Filter (optics) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Interferential filters are manufactured by deposition of materials in layers which block some wavelengths by interference and let other wavelengths pass.
These filters are senitive to the angle of incidence of incoming light (spectral trasnsmittance varies with angle).
These filters have usually lower transmittance values than SP and LP filters, and block all wavelengths outside of a selected interval, which can be wide or narrow, depending on the number of layers of the filter.

If you already have the filter, you will have to have a tripod, try to shoot on wind free days, and focus slightly close because of the differences in light.
