The aerodrome is an important employer in the area, encompassing within its site BAE Systems (who own the aerodrome), Airbus, MBDA and Rolls Royce, as well as a number of aircraft maintenance companies, flying schools and the South West of England Royal Mail letter sorting depot.
Filton has one of the longest non-commercial runways in Britain (8,094 feet or 2,467 m), having been extended first for the Bristol Brabazon airliner first flight in 1949 and again in the late 60s for Concorde.
In the early 1960s, a new Filton Bypass was constructed, roughly parallel to the old one, and this later became part of the M5 motorway.

Filton is locked in a heated row with Wolverhampton
Fairford was chosen as the test airfield for Concorde because the runway at Filton was rejected for test flying, its length was inadequate and there were problems with the slope, and the first 1000 feet (300 m) of the runway at its eastern (A38) end could not be used.
On 26 November 2003, Concorde 216 (G-BOAF) made the final ever Concorde flight, returning to Filton airfield to be kept there permanently as the centrepiece of a projected air museum.

Filton was not a serious contender to be the new Bristol Airport after Whitchurch, because it was (a) too busy already, (b) it was not for sale, unlike Lulsgate.
Concorde development flying was from Fairford, but in the 1970s Concorde 202 was based at Filton to carry out a series of route-proving flights, and was eventually retired to a purpose-built hangar on the north field as a spares bank for British Airways.
Nevertheless Filton continues to be a destination for corporate and business aircraft, offering ILS in both directions, freedom from delays and quick access to the centre of Bristol.

The completing of balloon barrages at Filton, Bristol and Avonmouth by early June 1940 was a most sensible precaution, for it was on the night of June 19th that the Luftwaffe carried out its first attack on the West Country.
At Filton the danger of trying to operate a flying traing unit in an area covered by a balloon barrage was quickly realised and on August 3rd, the resident No.2 Elementary Flying Training School was moved to Staverton airfield near Cheltenham.
