Finale is a music notation program (others include Nightengale, Encore, or its current biggest rival Sibelius) - you use your computer to put music on to the page which can then be played back, printed out, or saved as JPGs or MIDI files.
To reiterate, Finale is mainly a notation program, not a sequencing program.

Finale has gone through two big bursts of improvement, first in the early-to-mid 1990s, when Nightingale came out, featuring, among other things, note-attached slurs, which Finale did not have at the time; and again from 2001 to the present, when Sibelius came out with a streamlined interface and a variety of showy playback features.
Finale had dutifully created a big chunk of extra horizontal space to make sure that the lyric didn't collide with anything following (although the next note didn't have a syllable of its own) and distorted the visual rhythm of the measure badly.

No. Think of your Finale or Sibelius (or other sequencing or notation program) as the "conductor." This program "conducts" the sample software (or your soundcard) what to play and when.
Both programs may be run as a stand-alone application, or as a plug-in in a host application (such as V-Stack, Logic, Cakewalk, Performer, etc).
Essentially, what this means is that you are telling your notation program to DISPLAY a certain notehead and staffline, based on the INPUT note used to create it (which is why using a MIDI keyboard is so strongly recommended), and what OUTPUT pitch you wish to hear in playback.
