LLRX.com - A Perspective on the West Group Purchase of FindLaw
FindLaw provides West with complimentary content of significant depth and breath in certain areas, according to Wilens, and a means to expand West's brand.
FindLaw's brand has been in large measure built on their reputation as a free site with good content that has successfully marketed themselves as a reliable resource for both the professional and consumer communities.
FindLaw and West's respective legal directories will quickly be merged into one product to create the "Web's largest legal directory." The digital legal directory is a consumer as well as professional resource, and is rapidly replacing its hard copy counterparts.

Internet For Lawyers | LexisOne vs. FindLaw
On the plus side for FindLaw, they provide the internal pagination of a case (resulting in ease of page citing) and, additionally, FindLaw users can even link to other California cases cited in their returned case by using the hypertext links within each case.
FindLaw highlights your search terms in the returned cases, thus a quick scan of the case for relevancy is possible, but much to my dismay LexisONE does not.
Despite FindLaw's extensive archive of cases, a 1980 case that I already knew was on point was not returned in the result list of 100 cases.

Internet For Lawyers | Free High Tech Law Practice Tools From Findlaw
My enthusiasm for FindLaw is more than just a law librarians' zeal for the ability to access 60,000 law and government web sites with the click of a mouse or to launch a law-only search engine (LawCrawler).
When I first spoke to Stacy Stern, the three-year old FindLaw had a staff of ten (mostly attorneys) and was housed in temporary office space (the apartment that she and Tim lived in, or attempted to live in, and the one next to it and the one next to that).
FindLaw was in the midst of a build-out to accommodate a staff that had now grown to 35 (today, six months later, the staff is at 75 and growing daily).

FindLaw   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
FindLaw also contains cases tried in the U.S. Court of Appeals, however Lexis-Nexis Academic Universe has more complete holdings and is much easier to use.
Therefore it is not a good idea to search for words in the name of the case unless you are sure of the exact name of the case as you may retrieve unwanted results otherwise.
In general it is better to use the citation to search for a case, if you have it, although you may still receive unwanted results as your case may be mentioned in the text of other cases.

One other piece of news from my phone call with Scott Kinney, CEO of FindLaw: By the end of July, FindLaw will launch a directory of law-related blogs.
FindLaw called me a few months ago to pick my brain on the pretense they wanted to see about working together on blogs.
As FindLaw gets into providing blog products, as they probably will, their challenge will be that they do not have anyone at FindLaw who blogs nor does the company have an effective presence in the blogosphere.
