Macintosh Finder - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Finder's trash icon took on a more refined appearance, and the Labels feature known from System 6, which allowed the user to assign metadata labels to different files, was extended to let users customize their names and colors.
Finder 8.1, released in early 1998, introduced support for the more efficient HFS+ file system, and was the last major update to the classic Mac OS Finder.
Finder 10.0 introduced a highly-customizable toolbar which could be displayed at the top of every Finder window, and the NeXT-derived Column View, which displayed the hierarchy of the file system in a series of left-to-right panes.

Path Finder is a browser-style file manager developed by a single person that absolutely embarrasses the Mac OS X Finder with its huge feature set.
As the most spatially consistent part of the Finder, it's the one "location" in the computer that virtually every user feels comfortable with—which is why so many people use it to store their most important or frequently used files (much to the chagrin of computer neatniks everywhere).
The other notable change to the Finder comes thanks to a combination of file system notification APIs introduced in Panther (but not leveraged by the Finder at that time) and the features added on as part of Spotlight.

 Daring Fireball: That Finder Thing
The most common question I’ve heard about the new OS X Finder is “Why doesn’t it remember the size and location of open windows?” The answer requires an examination of the profound differences in the design philosophies underlying the old and new Finders.
The classic Finder has grown tremendously from its original version circa 1984 (when disks were measured in kilobytes), but the underlying paradigm of spatial orientation hasn’t changed.
The combination of in-place browser-style functions and the totally new concept of creating a “New Finder Window” (which is incidentally bound to command-n, destroying 16 years worth of muscle memory in the millions of Mac users who expect that sequence to create a new folder) necessarily compromises the spatial nature of the Finder.

Finder Keeper: An interview with Carla Speed McNeil
FINDER creator Carla Speed McNeil describes how her fantasy world has come to crystallise on the page.
FINDER is mainly seen through the eyes of perpetual outsider Jaeger Ayers, a mixed-race tracker, scout, loner and a ritual scapegoat from a native society living in, and outside, a culture of domed cities set within wildernesses.

 Nicholas Riley’s Weblog
To use Apple's own interface guidelines on the subject, it doesn't use the user's vocabulary (what are "special permissions"?), and doesn't mention what the user can do to get ouf of the situation (what if the user really wants to move the item?).
The OS is entirely aware of which application has a file open on the disk, and the name of that file nothing but some thoughtful programming stops the OS X Finder from giving the important and useful information that a user needs to fix the problem (and which OS 9 provided perfectly well).
That's the essence of my complaint: either the people who write the Finder at Apple have an incredibly high tolerance for flaky software, they don't use it at all, or are placed under pressure from management such that they don't have a chance to deliver quality software.

The posts in that thread represent a broad range of opinions, many of which center on network performance and threading issues that are a lot narrower than my personal concerns.
But I believe the mere existence of that thread, and others like it, is indicative of a larger malaise surrounding the Mac OS X Finder.
I'm going to outline what I believe is a fairly conservative vision of what the Finder could be, and explain what makes it better than the current Mac OS X Finder--not just for me personally, but for all Mac users.

MacOPINION : Marc Zeedar | Mac OS X -- Fixed!   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
Until Apple fixes some of the new Finder's major flaws, or third parties release extension-like hacks that make it work the way we're familiar with, there's really not a lot that can be done.
Take "Finder copy" and move it outside of the System Folder: I put it on the root level of my OS X volume and renamed it "Finder App" so it looked better.
What I can't figure out is why Apple didn't create a special version of the Old Finder that's more compatible with OS X: that would have given Mac users a familiar environment while not being especially difficult for Apple (after all, the current Old Finder nearly works perfectly).
