EFFECT OF FINE PARTICULATE AIR POLLUTION ON LUNG CANCER IN THE UNITED STATES AMONG SMOKERS AND NON-SMOKERS
A fine particle was defined as less than 2.5 micrometers in diameter; concentrations per cubic meter of air ranged from 5 to 20 micrograms in the 51 metropolitan areas.
A 10 microgram per cubic meter increase in fine particle concentration increased the death rate from lung cancer by 8 percent; the increased risk for lung cancer was found particularly for non-smokers whose risk of lung cancer is ordinarily very low.
The authors concluded "long-term exposure to combustion-related fine particulate air pollution is an important environmental risk factor for cardiopulmonary and lung cancer mortality".

NJDEP - In Pursut of Clean Air
Fine particulate matter, also referred to as PM2.5, is a mixture of fine liquid and solid particles such as dust, smoke, mist, fumes or smog that pollutes the air and causes serious health problems.
The fine particulate problem in New Jersey comes from sources such as diesel-powered engines that directly emit particles and from upwind power plants that emit gases that are converted to particles as they travel downwind to New Jersey.
Fine particulate levels are higher in these areas primarily due to diesel exhaust emissions.

The Clean Air Act, which was passed in 1970 and last amended in 1990, requires the U.S. to set National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) for pollutants that cause adverse effects to public health and the environment.
When air quality standards are announced as final, the Clean Air Act sets a basic schedule for achieving the standards, and in some cases, requirements to meet the standards.
Air monitoring is conducted to measure whether air quality standards are being met.

Air Pollution;  Fine Particles - Health Effects
"Air pollution from the combustion of fossil fuels (oil, coal, and natural gas) in cars, trucks, and power plants, is killing roughly 60,000 Americans each year, according to researchers at Harvard University's School of Public Health. This represents about 3% of all U.S. deaths each year.
Fine particles are not captured efficiently by modern pollution-control equipment.
Even air pollution levels that are well within legal limits are killing people, especially older people, and people with chronic heart and lung ailments, the Harvard researchers have found.
