San Francisco, September 2005 —The de Young museum, which opens its new building to the public on October 15, 2005, is pleased to announce the loan of Olmec Colossal Head, Monument 4 from the Museo de Antropología de Xalapa in Mexico.
In 1999, the Fine Arts Museums acquired a rare, Maya stela, dating to the 8th Century A.D. The stela represents an extraordinary example of the sophistication and elaborate craftsmanship of the ancient Maya civilization.
Her art is both acutely attuned to the urban landscape and its patterns and always conscious of her pre-Hispanic past.

Vas Prabhu, the director of education for the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco and the motivating force behind Gallery One, feels it is important for all ages of visitors to be aware of museum practices, foremost among them being conservation.
In 1992, when at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, Prabhu and the education department offered a popular series of adult and family programs called "Please Don't Touch!" that were initially funded by the National Endowment for the Arts and the W. Keck Foundation.
