 handprint : magenta watercolors
Winsor & Newton quinacridone magenta is one of the better paints sampled here, with a very fine pigment texture, a chroma just under 60 and a slight red bias to the color that shifts toward violet in tints.
This natural red pigment, one of the oldest reds, is a very fugitive, transparent, heavily staining, moderately dark valued, moderately dull magenta pigment, first used in Europe when it was brought from the New World in the 15th century.
Because it is a little warmer than a true magenta, quinacridone rose creates wonderfully clear, bright mixtures across the red to yellow span of a color wheel.

During the middle of the last century there was a decline in folk art in Europe but it continued to evolve in the USA, Russia and Australia, where many artists have developed their work to very fine standards.
There is now a growing interest in Europe where the old techniques are being revived and developed using the new paints and mediums that are now available.
As people travelled they took their own style with them and it was then copied, or adapted such as the Pennsylvanian Dutch style of the USA.

 handprint : synthetic inorganic pigments
All cobalt pigments are manufactured by calcining (roasting at extremely high temperatures) a mixture of cobalt oxide with an alkaline carbonate and, to produce the various colors, compounds of other metals (phosphorus, aluminum, tin, chromium, titanium, zinc or potassium); the resulting matrix is then ground into a fine powder.
The color was known in Europe as early as 1780, and used infrequently throughout the 19th century, mostly in watermedia paints.
Use of chrome colors began to decline steadily in the 20th century because most shades contain lead and the light yellow shades are impermanent (they fade in light and blacken when mixed with sulfur pigments), even after the introduction in the 1950's of more lightfast, silica encapsulated lead chromates.
