Fine-tuned universe - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The term fine-tuned universe refers to a collection of ideas that state the existence of life in the Universe is the result of the universe's physical constants relating to one another in exactly the fashion that is required in order for the universe to be hospitable for life.
Though there are fine tuning arguments that are naturalistic, the assertion that the universe was designed to be fine-tuned is largely promoted by advocates of intelligent design and other forms of creationism.
The fine-tuned universe argument is related to the anthropic principle, which states that any valid theory of the universe must be consistent with our existence as human beings at this particular time and place in the universe.

The Fallacy of the Argument from Design
One common argument for theism is based on the observation that the universe is finely tuned to produce life, and that this is an incredibly unlikely event.
Speaking mathematically, let "A" be the probability that the universe is fine-tuned for the kind of life which exists on earth, and "B" be the probability that earthlike life exists in a universe.
Most of those creatures will in fact be in a universe which is fine-tuned, and very few (or even no) creatures will be in a universe which is not tuned for its type of biology.

On Existence: The Fallacy of Intelligent Design
The likelihood of a fine-tuned universe given that there is an intelligent designer and that we live in a fine tuned universe is equal to the likelihood that we live in a fined tuned universe given that it was created by random chance and that we live in a fine-tuned universe.
This is to say that since we are here we must live in a universe fine-tuned to our existence regardless of whether that universe was created by an intelligent designer or by random chance.
It may seem on the surface that the likelihood of a universe in which all of the constants are right for life given an intelligent designer is much higher than the likelihood that the constants are right given random chance.

A region of contiguous highly-fine-tuned universes is a highly fine-tuned region, and a region of contiguous coarse-tuned universes is a coarse-tuned region.
These computer simulations provide evidence for the existence of coarse-tuned universes, universes in which the laws of physics and chemistry are, unlike those in our actual universe, robustly conducive to the existence of life (self-replicating systems).
Anthropic universes presumably fall into a range: in some cases the range of permitted values around the actual value is extremely narrow, and in other cases the local range is much wider (relatively speaking).

The universe generator can be thought of as analogous to a lottery ticket generator: just as it would be no surprise that a winning number is eventually produced if enough tickets are generated, it would be no surprise that a universe fine-tuned for life would occur if enough universes are generated.
According to the atheistic single-universe hypothesis, there is only one universe, and it is ultimately an inexplicable, "brute" fact that the universe exists and is fine-tuned.
I define a "universe" as any region of space-time that is disconnected from other regions in such a way that the constants of physics in that region could differ significantly from the other regions.

The anthropic principle and the big bang: natural or supernatural? A simple probabilistic answer. - Skeptical Inquirer - HighBeam Research
I suggest that if the universe is indeed fine-tuned for life, this does not logically point to the supernatural creation of the world and of life; such an interpretation is just one of many possible, equally arbitrary assumptions.
Let p(L) be the unconditional probability that life exists in a universe, and p(LIFT) the conditional probability that life exists in a universe provided that that universe is fine-tuned for life.
Expression (10a) states that the fine-tuning of our universe makes much more probable its supernatural origin as compared with a universe which is not "fine-tuned" for life.

And if the matter of the universe were not as homogeneous as it is, then large portions of it would have been so dense that they would already have undergone gravitational collapse.
