 Problem Idents
This erroneous "identification" was effected and verified by four Latent Print Examiners of the Scottish Criminal Records Office and presented as evidence in the trial of Policewoman Shirlie McKie.
The Latent Print Examiner, being relatively new in the business, had not previously caused anyone's incarceration based upon fingerprint evidence and the Prosecutor decided that no future warrants would be issued based on just the local examiner's work.
Fingerprint experts presented testimony about the latent and record prints, charting many "matching points" to prove the "identification." Four of the alleged "matching points" are indicated with red and green dots on the image below.

Fingerprint - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Fingerprints collected at a crime scene, or on items of evidence from a crime, can be used in forensic science to identify suspects, victims and other persons who touched a surface.
The term fingerprint normally refers to impressions transferred from the pad on the last joint of fingers and thumbs, though fingerprint cards also typically record portions of lower joint areas of the fingers (which are also used to effect identifications).
Fingerprint identification (also referred to individualization) occurs when an expert (or an expert computer system operating under threshold scoring rules) determines that two friction ridge impressions originated from the same finger or palm (or toe, sole) to the exclusion of all others.

Makewavs - we reduce noise on records and tapes converted to cds
Another common noise is that 'fuzz' sound made when the needle runs through a fingerprint (which is caused by deterioration of the vinyl from acids produced by the molds that grew on the oils of the fingerprint).
When this happens, the best corrective technique is to use the music on the other channel to replace the segment wiped out on the one channel by the pop.
It is very difficult to reduce the noise caused by the latter without compromising the sonic quality of the music itself, so we usually don't try.
