Fingersmith is the third slice of engrossing lesbian Victoriana from Sarah Waters.
Fingersmith takes the tale of two women, one prosperous, one poor, and then weaves a tale of deception and some of the uglier aspects of human nature into it.
Fingersmith is the story of a young pickpocket who becomes involved in a scheme to steal the inheritance of a young woman of whom it is said is quite naive.

Fingersmith, in case you are wondering, is the Victorian term for petty thief.
As part of a complex plan to deceive a young heiress, Sue is sent to a forbidding old mansion in the country, to be maid to the heiress, Maud Lilly, who is kept isolated from the real world by her obsessive and eccentric uncle.
Fingersmith was shortlisted for the 2002 Orange Prize.

Fingersmith is gripping; so suspenseful and twisting is the plot that for the last 250 pages, I read at breakneck speed.
Strip Fingersmith of its fantastic and foggy atmospherics, its creepily sensual symbolism and its powerfully metaphysical treatment of love and sexuality, and you're left with some dark and perverse matters.
Poverty, pornography, rank hypocrisy, child maltreatment, physical and mental abuse and torture of women, false imprisonment, involuntary commitment to madhouses and graphic hangings are among the topics (all tastefully explored and researched for historical accuracy).

Fingersmith is the story of two young women who fall in love while plotting their share of an old man's fortune.
Sue, the "fingersmith" or pickpocket, grabs at the chance to make her fortune by encouraging another young woman into marriage and then into a lunatic asylum.
From the minute a six-year-old Sue is taken to see a stage production of Oliver Twist and sees her friend Flora "putting a hand to a tear in her skirt and bringing out a purse and perfume", the (understated) symbolism does not stop.

In fact, the intertextuality between “Fingersmith” and Dickens’ body of work is made more jarring by the reader’s expectations of what a Dickens book should sound like.

Her latest novel, FINGERSMITH, beautifully recaptures the can't-put-it-down excitement of her literary forerunner Wilkie Collins, and narrates the story of a group of thieves who engineer a cruel plot to commit an heiress to a madhouse with real aplomb and skill.
But the novel is even better than that: it brings out into the open social and cultural concerns Collins or Dickens could not have spoken about quite so directly (particularly pornography and same-sex eroticism), and shows great insight into the metafictional issues involved in reworking this subgenre of the sensation novel.
Fingersmith is full of twists, each more surprising than the other.

I love Sarah Waters's Fingersmith, and was worried about the TV adaptation as I'd been disappointed by the BBC's version of Tipping the Velvet (which although beautiful to look at was let down by Keeley Hawes not being able to sing, and Rachael Stirling not being able to act).
Fingersmith is a very tightly plotted novel with breath taking twists and turns and I wondered if this could be done justice to in just 3 hours.
The adaptation was excellent, very little cut out, and went along at a cracking pace (although I did wonder whether if you hadn't read the book, would you miss things?).

 Fingersmith - Shiny Shelf
The second instalment of 'Fingersmith' demonstrates that, in fact, a great deal happened in the first, it's just that we the audience weren't aware of this at the time.
Revelations in the early part of the episode give it the dramatic impetus the first sometimes lacked and this narrative drive is sustained until a second round of - even more improbable yet even more persuasive - plot points which are info-dumped into the drama at its end.
Interesting and intelligent, albeit a little conservative in its approach to television 'Fingersmith' the TV series is impressively acted throughout and is certainly effective in making you seriously contemplate seeking out the novel on which it is based on the assumption that it will at least be as good and probably rather better.

Based on Sarah Waters's novel of the same name, Fingersmith tells a profoundly disturbing tale of scheming and betrayals in Victorian England, as a cadre of thieves plots to divest a young aristocrat of her inheritance.
A burgeoning love interest between one of thieves and the young aristocrat may (or may not) thwart the thieves' plans, but this is only one of many twists that keeps the audience wondering what will happen next, and whether anyone can be saved from a grisly end.
Fingersmith has clearly benefited from a faithful screenplay by Peter Ransling and a firm guiding hand by director Aisling Walsh.
