Fingolfin - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Tolkien, Fingolfin was a High King of the Ñoldor in Beleriand, eldest son of Finwë and Indis, older brother of Finarfin, and the younger half-brother of Fëanor.
Fingolfin led the largest host of the Ñoldor when they fled Aman for Middle-earth, even though he thought this unwise; he did not want to abandon his people to Fëanor.
Fingolfin and the Ñoldor then came to the northern shores of Lake Mithrim, from which the Fëanorian part of the host had withdrawn.

Fingolfin's War-Gear his Armor and Weaponry
Fingolfin was perhaps the epitome of the ancient Eldar, wise, brave, and full of that fire only those who had dwelt in Valinor possessed.
Fingolfin's armour is the most complex in nature the Noldor could devise at this stage of their stay in Middle-earth.
Fingolfin would have wielded the sword in a whirling fashion (thus the arm must be able to move independent from the shield), blocking strokes and slashing at the same time.

Fingolfin   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-07)
Fingolfin, second son of Finwe, was the high king of the Noldor in Middle-earth after the death of Feanor at Dagor-nuin-Giliath, 'Battle Under the Stars.' He and his people followed reluctantly after Feanor in the pursuit of Morgoth after the theft of the Silmarils.
The kingship was forfeited freely by Maedhros and Fingolfin became king of the Noldor on Middle-earth.
Fingolfin established himself in Hithlum and kept guard on the gates of Angband until the Battle of Sudden Flame in 455 of the First Age when he challenged Morgoth before the gates of Angband and, after wounding him seven times with his sword, Ringil, was slain by Morgoth's mighty hammer, Grond.

There they fought a mighty battle, but though Fingolfin wounded the Dark Lord, he could not prevail, and was finally crushed by Morgoth.

 09-01-00: Fingolfin the Greatest? Absolutely!
Fingolfin's challenge to Morgoth is made in the bleak but very real prospect of a Middle Earth held hostage forever by an unalterably evil Vala, Morgoth.
Fingolfin had no such bride to win nor such a faith in which to find comfort; he was cursed by the Oath of Feanor and were he to die, there could be no guarantee of his soul resting in Eldamar - the oath that bound him forfeited that privilege (even if only in his mind).
Valiant, loyal, true to his word, a defender of his people, a leader by example; Fingolfin's burdens were greatest, his condition the most desperate, his actions all borne from the heart of a pure and noble soul.

Then Fingolfin beheld (as it seemed to him) the utter ruin of the Noldor, and the defeat beyond redress of all their houses; and filled with wrath and despair he mounted Rochallor his great horse and rode forth alone, and none might restrain him.
That was the last time in those wars that he passed the doors of his stronghold, and it is said that he took the challenge willingly; for though his might was greatest of all things in the world, alone of the Valar he knew fear.
But Fingolfin gleamed beneath it as a star; for his mail was overlaid with silver, and his blue shield was set with crystals; and he drew his sword Ringil, that glittered like ice.

King Fingolfin, however, from his chief realm of Hithlum, observed Morgoth's initial assault firsthand - and probably realized, for the first time, the true nature of Morgoth's power, and the utter futility of the Noldor's feud with him.
