Finishing school - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A finishing school is a type of private school for girls that emphasizes cultural studies and prepares students especially for social activities.
Switzerland is noted for its private finishing schools, such as Institut Villa Pierrefeu or Institut Alpin Videmanette (now closed), where Diana, Princess of Wales studied, and Mon Fertile, where Camilla Parker Bowles was partly educated.
It also is known for traditional boarding schools such as Institut Le Rosey, whose alumni include the last Shah of Iran and Rainier III of Monaco.

Most other Finishing Schools have ceased their activities (institut la Videmanette where Princess Diana went) or specialised in another field (for examples: Lucy Clayton's Finishing School is now a secretarial school that also teaches deportment).
Deportment is only a small part of what is taught in Finishing School, but it is the vision of the Anglo-Saxon press....
This is the reason why when someone is serious about doing a documentary about the Finishing Schools or starting one in a country, they always go back to the same two schools.

Before John Kerry, the only alumni of Swiss finishing schools I had ever met (in my younger days) were a certain type of lively English girl, a couple of minor princesses from Gulf emirates and a charming young Iranian lady whose family had been forced to flee after the shah fell.
Nonetheless, barely had the prime minister finished when the absentee senator did a daytime version of his midnight ramble and barged his way on to the air to insist he knew better than Iraq's head of government what was going on in that country.
After their schooling in Switzerland, those well-mannered English gels used to describe themselves as "finished." If he wasn't "finished" after graduating from the Institut Montana in Zug in 1955, this week John Kerry is looking finished in a far more American sense.

Las Vegas Mercury: Books: The Finishing School by Muriel Spark
Muriel Spark's satirical attacks on English intelligentsia have a surgical detachment; she wields irony like a scalpel rather than a hatchet, although being from Scotland, a convert to Catholicism and an expatriate for decades, her vision is prickly enough in its implications.
The Finishing School is a fairly slender novel, and Spark does not shrink from moving it along with starkly expository passages.
Most of the students are as thin on the page as they would be in real life, and it's hard to imagine their actions illustrating any greater degree of insight; the school staff and supporting characters, presented in brief but resonant sketches, are as developed as they need to be.

Powell's Books - Review-a-Day - The Finishing School by Muriel Spark, reviewed by The Atlantic Monthly
Her new novel, The Finishing School, satirically assails, among other things, the culture of spectacle that has grown up around novel-writing, and in particular around novel-writing by attractive young people.
The Finishing School, like several of her most recent books (Symposium, Aiding and Abetting) has a somewhat anorexic quality; Spark's austere principle "Never apologize, never explain" is embodied in storytelling of a fablelike simplicity and directness.
The novel, like The Finishing School, is much concerned with the erotics of teaching, that contradictory authority of the teacher who seduces and bullies at the same time, and the primitive ways in which people know and label one another at school.
