		Gerald Nanson and colleagues have examined aeolian dunes on the periphery on the Simpson Desert near the Finke River in the west, near Birdsville in the east, southward in the Tirari Desert near Lake Eyre and northwards along the edge of the MacDonnell Ranges in the Todd River floodout area.
		The Finke river provides alluvial evidence of fluvial activity and associated source-bordering dunes as old as 90, 000 years, however, postglacial source-bordering dunes were built during two aeolian phases; one between 17, 000 years and 9, 000 years ago, and a more recent phase at about 5, 000 years ago.
		The source-bordering dunes adjacent to the Finke River have been aligned by wind towards the northwest, similar to the wind direction today, whereas the dark red regional linear dunes in the same area were aligned during the Pleistocene almost due north.

	PACSOA - Livistona mariae
		Palm Valley, situated in the Finke Gorge National Park in the MacDonnell Range system, Northern Territory is of considerable interest to tourists and scientists alike largely because of the presence of a stand of the relict cabbage palm Livistona mariae F.
		Although the explorer Ernest Giles was the first to discover the palms in the Finke Gorge in 1872, he almost certainly bypassed Palm Valley itself, and its discovery is attributed to a Lutheran missionary from Hermannsburg Mission some time later.
		The Finke River bed below Palm Valley has a permanent shallow water table for much of its length, but it is subject to severe water wash and the few palms found there are restricted to areas which escape the full force of the floodwaters.

		The sole designated campsite is at Boggy Hole, much nicer than it sounds and around two hours (28.5km) from Hermannsburg.
		The campsite looks out from beneath river red gums to permanent reed-fringed waterholes, best seen at dawn as the sunlight creeps across the gorge and the ponds are alive with birdlife.
		Beyond Boggy Hole, the track crisscrosses rather than follows the riverbed before the roller-coaster ride to the Giles Road across some low dunes thinly wooded with desert oaks – beware of oncoming traffic on blind crests.
