 | | Gerald Nanson and colleagues have examined aeolian dunes on the periphery on the Simpson Desert near the Finke River in the west, near Birdsville in the east, southward in the Tirari Desert near Lake Eyre and northwards along the edge of the MacDonnell Ranges in the Todd River floodout area. |
 | | The Finke river provides alluvial evidence of fluvial activity and associated source-bordering dunes as old as 90, 000 years, however, postglacial source-bordering dunes were built during two aeolian phases; one between 17, 000 years and 9, 000 years ago, and a more recent phase at about 5, 000 years ago. |
 | | The source-bordering dunes adjacent to the Finke River have been aligned by wind towards the northwest, similar to the wind direction today, whereas the dark red regional linear dunes in the same area were aligned during the Pleistocene almost due north. |
