Finnish patriotic, spiritual and folksong texts.
The premiere of this hymn took place in 1941 at the 25th Anniversary concert of the Laulumiehet choir.
Much to my chagrin, numerous other texts have been adapted to this orchestral piece in later years, bringing this Finnish national treasure to the level of the old proverbial "war horse." All are void of the beauty and majesty that this music possesses.
Besides, the hymn has become a sacred song of sorts, laden with national fervor and excitement, representing the longing for freedom of peoples everywhere.

 Finlandia
Finlandia became a world favourite, and many arrangements were made of it: an arrangement for military band in 1909, a choral and orchestral version in English in 1925, and an arrangement for marimba orchestra in the 1940s.
Finlandia starts with a threatening motif in the brass, which immediately increases from forte to fortissimo.
After the hymn the tempo becomes faster, the brass fanfares return, and the short symphonic poem rushes to its triumphant end as the hymn theme continues to play, augmented by the brass.
