  Finnish Jaeger troops
The Jäger troops were volunteers from Finland in Germany trained to Jaegers during World War I.
Educated as elite troops[?] they were also fit to assume command as officers over the untrained and uneducated troops of the Civil War.
In the 1920s a long feud between officers with Jäger-background and Finnish officers who had served in the Russian Tsarist army was concluded in favor of the Jägers: Most of the commanders of army corps, divisions and regiments in the Winter War were Jägers.

Jaeger troops were first organized in the 18th century, when also some Jaegers participated in the American War of Independence.
Jaegers became more popular after the Napoleonic Wars, when volunteers of bourgeois background were organized for the resistance against Napoleon's occupation.
Continuing the earlier traditions, these Jaegers were patriotic volunteers, carrying the costs for their weapons and uniforms by their own means - or with the help of contributions from friends and neighbours, often organized in clubs and leagues.

The relationship between the Soviet Union and Finland was tense and frosty—both the two periods of forced russification at the turn of the century, and the legacy of the failed socialist rebellion in Finland contributed to a strong mutual distrust.
Finnish troops had only to take their own winter clothing in many instances and had spent most of their lives in the forest, as the vast majority of Finns were rural dwellers until the 1950's.
Finnish immigrants in the United States and Canada returned home, and many volunteers (one of them actor-to-be Christopher Lee) travelled to Finland to join Finland's forces: 1,010 Danes, 895 Norwegians, 372 Ingrians, 346 Finnish expatriates, and 210 volunteers of other nationalities made it to Finland before the war was over.

Prince Frederick Charles of Hesse - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Finland's position vis-à-vis Germany was already evolving towards that of a protectorate by spring 1918, and the election of Prince Frederick, brother-in-law of William II, German Emperor, was rather thought of as a confirmation of the close relations.
Governmental archives reveal that the monarchical designation of the king was intended, at least tentatively, to be "Charles I, King of Finland and Karelia, Duke of Åland, Grand Prince of Lapland, Lord of Kaleva and the North" (Kaarle I, Suomen ja Karjalan kuningas, Ahvenanmaan herttua, Lapinmaan suuriruhtinas, Kalevan ja Pohjolan herra).
In the Finnish election document the prince is called Fredrik Kaarle, but according to conventional wisdom his name as king would have been Väinö I of Finland.

The White Army profitized on the Finnish Jaeger troops (2,000 man) able to act as instructors and officers, on volontairs from Sweden (1,200 man, of whom a large part officers), and on Finnish officers from the Russian Tsarist units, who returned home after the October Revolution.
In reality, German troops had made a necessary contribution to the Whites' victory, but for the sake of National Pride, it was important to stress the importance of the White Guards, the basis of the White Army, and of the Finnish Jaegers, the Army's elite.
After the Continuation War, the Finnish White Guards were disbanded in 1944, as Soviet Union demanded this.

 Informat.io on Finnish Russian War
This partial healing of the wounds and rifts after the Finnish Civil War (1918), and Finland's language strife, is still referred to as "the Spirit of the Winter War," although it should also be noted that many communists were not allowed to fight in Finland's conscripted army because of their political background.
Due to Stalin's ethnic paranoia, the vast bulk of the Red Army's troops that fought in the Winter War were taken from the southern regions of the Soviet Union, since it was Stalin's opinion that Russian troops from the area immediately bordering Finland could not be trusted to fight against the Finns.
On the other hand, Finnish troops had only to wear their own normal winter clothing in many instances and had spent most of their lives in the forest, as the vast majority of Finns were rural dwellers until the 1950s.

Jaeger Battalions of White Army were typically somewhat better organised and more often had better connection and leadership so they were bit better.

Kerensky and Brusilov were of the opinion that once the shooting began the soldiers would ignore the calls for political meetings and return to the trenches to support the comrades who chose to fight on(4).
These fresh troops encouraged those who were withdrawing and for a few brief moments, the Central Powers' soldiers were held at bay but the general retreat had already begun.
The Jaegers said that another unit had relieved them and they had simply performed a retreating movement while the Finns reminded their comrades that they had participated in the deadly street by street fighting in Tarnopol.
