The results will be further used by several universities and institutes in Finland to study the effects of UV radiation on forests, agriculture, human health and water ecosystems.
The UV monitoring data of the University of Helsinki are used for 1) examining the effect of UV radiation on chemical processes in the atmosphere and for 2) studying the possibility of UV radiation causing disturbances on photosynthesis.
The measurements of the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health are carried out during campaigns where the UV exposure of outdoor workers are estimated.

 BAROBIT
Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) is providing a pressure sensing instrument named Barobit for the Mars Express/Beagle2 -mission (launch 2003) and for Mars NetLander -mission (launch 2007).
Beagle2 is a small lander carried aboard the Mars Express orbiter and eventually separated for landing on the surface of Mars.
Last is a long period fluctuation of pressure caused by seasonal condensation and evaporation of CO to and from the polar caps, causing the surface pressure to vary by about 25 % over the course of the year.

The new operational HIRLAM at the Finnish Meteorological Institute
The co-operation between the Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) and the Center for Scientific Computing (CSC) has made it possible for FMI to run the operational HIRLAM system on the most powerful computers available in Finland.
Meteorologically the both suites are very similar and the main features are listed in Table 1 for the ATA suite and in Table 2 for the ENO suite.
This prevents, for instance, some Finnish lakes being free of ice all the year round as it is in the HIRLAM climate system.

The relevant meteorological parameters were evaluated using a meteorological pre-processing model, adapted specifically for urban environment (Karppinen et al., 1998, 2000c).
The model utilises meteorological synoptic and sounding observations, and its output consists of hourly time series of relevant atmospheric turbulence parameters (the Monin-Obukhov length scale, the friction velocity and the convective velocity scale) and the boundary layer height.
The contribution of non-exhaust particulate matter emissions (including resuspension of particulate matter from road surfaces) was estimated to be directly proportional to the concentrations originating from primary vehicular emissions (Tiitta et al., 2002).

13 September 2005 The Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) has selected an SGI Altix high performance computer to deliver increasingly accurate land, high-altitude and marine weather predictions for Finland.
"We chose the SGI Altix because of the computer's shared memory architecture, which means that every processor has access to the complete memory; this makes it a very strong general purpose machine that is easy to port software to", stated Dr. Johan Silen, IT Director, Finnish Meteorological Institute.
FMI actively participates in European Union research programmes especially on the topics of stratospheric ozone depletion, climate and atmospheric composition changes, wind energy, Baltic Sea pollution and urban air pollution.
