During World War II some 70,000 war children were evacuated from Finland to Scandinavia, chiefly to Sweden.
In comparison to Finland's approximately 23,000 military casualties in the Winter War, the 66,000 in the Continuation war, and the total of 2,000 civilian casualties – and the roughly equally many seriously wounded – the war children were, of course, not physically injured, let alone killed.

The Finnish government’s rejection of the Soviet proposals and its categorical rejection of the compromises proposed by Moscow demonstrated that it was being backed by one or more foreign powers to cling to a boundary which represented a serious threat to the security of the Soviet Union.
The Finnish government replied on 27 November, denying that their troops had been responsible for the incident complained of and proposing, firstly, that discussions should take place on the mutual withdrawal of both Finnish and Soviet troops from the frontier and, secondly, that a joint inquiry should be held into the incident:

As the movie continued, the sense of the unknown, a certain amount of foreboding and the ever-present desire to connect with family was also subtly introduced to give a very full sense of the conflict within this child's mind.

european-films.net - review: Äideistä parhain (Mother of Mine)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-31)
The fictional story of just one of the 70.000 Finnish war children who were placed with foster parents in neutral Sweden while the Finns fought the Russians, Äideistä parhain is unnecessarily bookended by contemporary scenes that diminish the power of its central section.
Aesthetically misty – the film looks like it has been shot with a permanently hazed over lens – the film’s central theme is less nebulous; even the title explicitly refers to the mother-child relationship that is the crux of the story.
Where the screenplay falters is in its present tense, where an aged Eero is invited to Sweden for the funeral of his foster mother and he decides to ask his own mother about her motives for sending him off during the war.
