Finntroll - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Although it is a Finnish band, Finntroll's lyrics are in Swedish, because Swedish just sounds "damn trollish", according to the band's first vocalist, Katla (who speaks Swedish as a native language).
Finntroll was founded in 1997, by Teemu "Somnium" Raimoranta, guitarist of Impaled Nazarene, and Jan "Katla" Jämsen.
Finntroll didn't dissolve after losing one of their founding members, but decided to go on, touring for two weeks in Europe, supported by the group Katatonia.

So far, no change in Finntroll's awesomeness has been noted, a fact particularly worrisome to Linkin Park and Korn fans, who have become deathly afraid of other forms of music in case they might be Finntroll in disguise.

Finntroll : Nattfödd - Review at Harvest Moon Music
I've been aware of the Finnish band Finntroll for a couple of years now, knowing them to be a Black Metal band that incorporated folk elements into their sound.
To say that Finntroll is a "Black Metal" band would be a misclassification, however.
The brutal folk metal of Finntroll is a unique blend of extreme and traditional elements that sets this band apart from their peers.

A Finnish style of polka, this humppa influence is brought to life by a plethora of keyboard wizardry, easily imitating the sounds of an accordion, a mouth harp, and kazoo.

Recorded in a cabin in the woods, Finntroll’s third album was almost bereft of metal in any shape or form.

Beginning from the year 2002 the band hit a string of bad luck, beginning from cancellations of some tours, continuing with the vocalist Katla's worsening throat problems which finally lead to his early retirement from the band.
While recovering from the loss of a dear friend and bandmate the rest decided that ending the band would be an insult to his memory, and decided to honour and grieve him the best way they could, by going on tour and keeping his music alive.
The new material captures the essence of Finntroll, raw, epic, melodic in all it's glory, combining elements of metal, folk, punk, humppa mixed to a trollish beat.

Three years have passed since Finntroll unleashed their latest trollstorm (“Jaktens Tid”) upon the world and many things have changed in their realm since.
“Skog” is perhaps the most typical Finntroll song of the three remaining tracks (surprisingly written by newcomer Routa) and goes back to the sound of “Midnattens Windunder” with its haunting and mid-tempo humppa-esque rhythms.
“Helvete” differs quite a bit from the Finntroll we are used to with its jazzy feel but after two spins it hits like a punch in the face as well.

Finntroll are anything but simple, however, and can probably be considered one of the most complex and eccentric metal bands on the scene today.
Combining Black Metal with elements of folk, classic metal, and Power Metal, these guys show a remarkable ability to derive a listenable sound from influences that would on the surface seem to be mutually exclusive.
This has been done before, of course, by bands such as Waylander, Elvenking, and others, but Finntroll have carved out a unique niche for themselves in the world of extreme folk metal.

Finntroll's debut album was the result of random experimentation by a few drunken musicians, but they have managed to form a whole career out of it.
Album highlight "Rivfader" is a fantastic amalgamation of all these elements, Trollhorn's keyboards playing just as big a part as the guitars of Skrymer and Somnium, whist the title track is Finntroll's greatest song to date, featuring a great keyboard riff and some insane babbling from Katla.
With this record, Finntroll both set the foundation for what will (hopefully) be a long and successful career, and also recorded the best debut of 1999.

It would not only be the act’s revolutionary clash of tradition and amplification that set them apart, Finntroll also chose to sing exclusively in Swedish, apparently because this language was better to evoke the trollish spirit.

Following up their debut, "Midnattens Widunder", the Finnish Finntroll unleash yet another fun folk/polka/fl metal release.
As with their debut, this isn't just another fl/folk act that take themselves way too seriously.
Sharing the same line-up as before (including Somnium aka Teemu Raimoranta of Impaled Nazarene fame), Finntroll seems to have gelled together nicely as the songs have a more fluid and established feel compared to their original release.
