Observer | So very modern but so very square
And it is in that collision between two apparently irreconcilable worlds, expressed in a six-foot-deep band of stone and glass, that Parry has managed to create an arresting piece of architecture that belongs to both.
Finsbury Square, though it feels indistinguishable from the financial hub of the City of London all around it, is actually in Islington.
It was laid out as a residential square at the end of the eighteenth century, but every trace of the terraces that once stood here has vanished.

Leeds Civic Trust - Blenheim Square and Blackman Lane
The square was created as part of the enthusiasm in late-Georgian Leeds for planning exclusive genteel residential squares and streets, particularly on the fringes of the increasingly congested and dirty town centre.
The conveyances of the building plots included covenants to preserve a uniformity of architectural style and the mutual enjoyment of the oval garden which was to be laid out between the two terraces.
Probably later still, the north-western side of the square was occupied by a typical Leeds three-story terrace of modest redbrick Victorian houses.

Casebook: Jack the Ripper - The Windsor Street Stakeout
The implication is astonishing: that the police, before they ever heard of 9/10ths of the material that fills most Jack the Ripper theories, already had enough evidence that it only remained to trace the fiend to his lair and make the bust.
Thus Windsor Street is merged with the Stephen White story to suggest an identity for Macnaghton's "City PC at Mitre Square." We know from Ripperana #18 that it was Watkins, not White, who saw the killer at Mitre Square.
The stakeout men heard of the Mitre Square murder within 5 minutes, and acted as if the killer might already be home, washing his hands or destroying evidence.
