  Miall -- Oberland, 12
He had the preceding day reached the Finsteraarhorn with his young attendant, but being overtaken unawares by dusk, had been obliged to pass the night upon a bare rock, and without fire, beneath the inclement sky.
The fl colour of the rock, the whiteness of the snow, and the bluish green of the ice, together with the beautiful azure of the sky, which seems to rise from the glaciers and to sink on the opposite side upon the ice, afford the only variety to the dazzled eye.
At the base of the Finsteraarhorn, at an actual elevation of 12,000 feet, we observed a butterfly resembling the common white species, and another on the Aletsch glacier upwards of 9,000 feet high.
