Topic: Fintan OToole

New York State Writers Institute - Finton O'Toole   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
O'Toole's 1997 book, The Ex-Isle of Ireland: Images of a Global Ireland, examined Ireland's role in a new multinational culture.
Born in Dublin in 1958, O'Toole was appointed drama critic at the New York Daily News in 1997, and currently resides in New York City.
O'Toole's book is worth reading for this alone, so also for its wonderfully vital account of what it was like to go to the theatre in Sheridan's day.

“O'Toole's weapons are laconic wit, a finely tuned sense of the ridiculous or anomalous and a spare, beautiful style.

O'Toole reads Johnson's 1774 death as a turning point in Anglo-Indian relations; within three years, the Mohawks were siding with Brits in the American Revolution.
Johnson, O'Toole argues, embodied the colonists' fantasies about the Indians—i.e., that their barbarity could be civilized and diluted by contact with enlightened colonists.
O'Toole (A Traitor's Kiss) brings together great man history and real analytical rigor; this book should be a winner with academics and history hobbyists alike.

 Edinburgh Book Festival 2005
Fintan O'Toole's account of the life of William Johnston an Irish adventurer who became a crucial communicator between the British government and the Six nations of the Iroquois.
Johnston's career is in some ways that of the imperialist writ large, and provides O'Toole with a jumping-off point for description of imperialism at work, befriending the Iroquois only to abandon them in the wake of the United States' war for independence.
O'Toole's book is the first of a projected three, the other two taking the lives of Billy the Kid and Margaret Mitchell, author of 'Gone With The Wind' as their ostensible theme.

Fintan O'Toole, The Ex-Isle of Erin   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
Fintan O'Toole does an admirable job of addressing many issues of modern Ireland in The Ex-Isle of Erin, a collection of essays on many aspects of Irish life.
O'Toole takes an unflinching look at the great strides Ireland's young government took to encourage and control the arts.
The text is at times a little dry, but overall, O'Toole presents fascinating glimpses of the Irish mind, a peek behind the veil of Irish society.

Fintan O’Toole’s attention these days rarely wanders north of the border, but Mitchel McLaughlin’s performance on Questions and Answers the other day led him to consider the concept of crime (subs needed) and more specifically war crime in today’s Irish Times.
The International Criminal Court, of which Ireland is a member, clearly states that war crimes do apply to “an armed conflict not of an international character”, a category which obviously applies to the Northern Ireland troubles.

O'Toole begins with a litany of complaints about the ignorance of current education on Shakespeare and how simplistic it is.
The first obvious point is that Fintan O'Toole's argument against the precriptive Victorian influence is about twenty years out of date.
With all the new enthusiasm for book groups amongst the reading population, O'Toole's book reminds you that Shakespeare might be a very good place to start.

A Traitor's Kiss: The Life of Richard Brinsley Sheridan, 1751-1816:Otoole, Fintan; O'Toole, ...
This unusual Irish-English life has been captured by Fintan O'Toole, in an innovative work that opens up a radical new perspective on a great writer.
Whether he is writing about the uproarious nighttime world of the eighteenth-century theater or the grim aftermath of the Irish rebellion of 1798, O'Toole is precise, vivid, and economical, an excellent narrator of a life that dramatizes so many of the issues which are still resonant in relations between the Irish and the English today.
He shows that Sheridan must be understood as an Irish writer and dissident, a complicated man who walked a thin line between success in London and extreme danger as a supporter of democratic reform and Irish independence.
