And right now, superhero comics are inclined toward focusing on the most faithful, because they have the financial leeway to do so, and an assurance that the money won't stop flowing in the short term if they cater to the most devout.
Comics can now stand up in competition for major book prizes, but that invites a environment-attuned criticism that's naturally going to be inclined away from the visual element, often away from the interplay of text and image that's the core of the comics form, at least beyond a superficial level.
Western comics don't have to necessarily be pamphlets, nor do they only have to be sold in Direct Market stores, but Japanese comics have so dominated the conversation concerning bookstores and the digest format that they're sometimes treated as one and the same.

Ice (comics) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
When the character joined Justice League International, the comic book creators believed that her real name had never been given but were mistaken (it was revealed in the Global Guardians entry in Who's Who in the DC Universe).
The comic's writers later admitted having brought her into the League with the intention of killing her off within a year, but were surprised by how popular she quickly became, and decided to keep her.
Fire and Ice are often seen together, as is the case in the comics.

comics on fire « nah pop, no style
Here’s a comic we haven’t discussed lately: Sally Forth.
One of the reasons I don’t talk about Sally Forth as often as some other comics is that it’s one of those that I can’t just snag online and repost here — the images of recent strips are protected so you can’t save them to your computer (or link to them from elsewhere).
The web comic in a lot of cases appropriates characters and situations from famous comics and cartoons, sort of in the style of the myriad “Family Circus” spinoffs, but without one particular comic being used every time.

Alan Moore's "Voice Of The Fire" - Quarter To Three Forums
Written in 1996, Voice Of The Fire has a tricky structure; a series of short stories, all told in first person, which confine themselves to key moments in the 6000-year history of a geographically small area of Northampton, England.
The effect is initially off-putting, especially in the infamous first chapter which is written in a Bronze Age dialect from the point of view of a somewhat retarded child.
Voice Of The Fire can be seen as a first tentative step towards the creation of a new language, or as magical/historical detective work...

 Don Markstein's Toonopedia: Harvey Kurtzman
Later, he got a job assisting Louis Ferstadt, whose work of choice was portrait painting, but who maintained a "day job" supplying artwork for comic books, including ones published by the companies that eventually evolved into DC and Marvel.
Editing only two EC comics didn't provide enough income, so in 1952 Kurtzman talked Gaines into launching a new title, radically different in both concept and style from any that had ever been published before — Tales Calculated to Drive You Mad, which, under the title Mad magazine, is still in print.
In 1962, Kurtzman began a parody of a famous newspaper comic, which he would later describe as his "golden cage" — a feature that paid his bills in fine style, but left him less time than he wanted to pursue other projects.

There aren't many ways I can give back to the world, apart from producing comics, so it occurred to me that I could also post scripts I don't have time to produce myself.
The drawback to the latter is that the writer needs the artist to be committed to His Vision, and for an extended period of time, but it's really the artist who needs to be the ultimate boss in comics, since he's the comics equivalent of a film director.
Comics needs a dedicated name for source scripting, like film has "screenplay" and television has "teleplay".

Now, however, these fires need new fuel to burn, fresh air to breath and new energies to transform from one state to another.
