Some of the older all-brick and mortar forges were built with a trough cast into the surface of the hearth to create this same effect permanently.
Fire bricks are placed around the perimeter of the firepot to help build the height of the fire.
The top of the fire brick acted as a smoke shelf to help control back drafts from pushing smoke back down the chimney on windy days, which until I started using this fire brick back I had problems with a smoky chimney.

A brick is a block made of kiln-fired material, usually clay or shale, but also may be of mud, etc. Clay bricks are formed in a moulding (the soft mud method), or in commercial manufacture more frequently by extruding clay through a die and then wire-cutting them to the proper size (the stiff mud process).
Brick made from clay that is hardly more than dampened must be formed in molds with a great deal of pressure, usually applied by a hydraulic press.
A highly impervious and ornamental surface may be laid on brick either by salt glazing, in which salt is added during the burning process, or by the use of a "slip," which is a glaze material into which the bricks are dipped.

 Brick
The standard brick measures approximately 2.25 x 4 x 8 in, and has a crushing strength of between 1000 and 3000 lb/in² (7 to 21 GPa) depending on quality.
For bricks of extreme refractory character, alumina content can be as high as 50-80% (with correspondingly less silica) and silicon carbide may also be present.
In Role-playing games, a Brick is a character whose main useful skill is being able to take a great deal of damage (usually a high Physical Defense Stat) and act as a shield for weaker allies.

 Fire Brick - AskTheBrain.com
The fire is lighted at the mouths of the flues or live-holes, which are closed when it burns well; and in favourable weather the bricks will be completely burnt in about twenty-five or thirty days, in the course of which time the cindery matter dispersed through their substance becomes gradually ignited and consumed.
The ends of the bricks which were closest to the fire were a darker color than the other faces and could be used for accents in the finished wall.
Some bricks which were closest to the fire recieved a natural wood ash glaze from the sand that fell into the fires and became vaporized and deposited on the bricks.

Greencastle Fire Chief Bill Newgent, whose investigative team has been called to study the matter, confirmed only that the case is "under investigation" right now, stating that he feared the release of any further information could jeopardize the investigation.
While the Carters try to focus on the fact that their family was spared physical harm from the fire, the same could not be said for a Greencastle firefighter who sustained a minor hand injury while fighting the flames.

Brick Walls - Fire Resistance of Brick Walls
This system supersedes the old fire ratings and provides an accurate method of predicting the ability of a wall to maintain strength in a fire and to resist its spread.
The fire resistance level is expressed in minutes for each of these periods and always in the same order.
For this reason it is impossible to give an FRL for a particular brick as the fire resistance period for structural adequacy is specific to the wall type and its boundary support conditions.

Brick masonry walls successfully withstand the load during test and the hose stream test conducted immediately after the wall has been subjected to the fire exposure.
This structural integrity of brick masonry walls is attested to in many fires where the masonry walls have remained standing when all other parts of the building have been destroyed or consumed during the fire.
The fire resistance ratings of walls and partitions are usually less than ultimate fire resistance periods as determined by test, since most building code requirements are in multiples of 1 hr with a 4-hr maximum.

It is important for refractory brick to have a high resistance to erosion by ash-laden gases and to the Flux (metallurgy) fluxing action of molten slag; it should not spall badly under rapid temperature change, and its structural strength should hold up well under rapid temperature changes.
Fire-brick is baked in the kiln until it is partly vitrification vitrified, and for special purposes may also be glazed.

 Brian's Brick Oven Folly
With a good two hour fire and a 20 minute rest with the fire in the back, the center of the floor of the oven is at about 750ºF. After about 90 minutes of pizza party this is down to about 500ºF. I keep a fire going in the back of the oven throughout.
The reason is that you want the heat from the fire to soak into the bricks to heat them, and if the hot gasses and flames go straight up the chimney, you'll lose all of their heat.
By the way, after a two hour firing and a 90 minute pizza party, the bottom of the slab, which I can touch by reaching under the wood storage area of the base, is hot to the touch, but not scorching.
