Its origins lie in the hard rock bands who between 1967 and 1974 took blues and rock and created a hybrid with a heavy, guitar-and-drums-centered sound.
Originally the result is simple and powerful, although some of the original heavy metallers joked that their simplified sound was more the result of limited ability than of innovation.
A widespread but disputed hypothesis about the origin of the genre was brought forth by "Chas" Chandler, who was a manager of the Jimi Hendrix Experience in 1969, in an interview on the PBS TV programme "Rock and Roll" in 1995.

The album continues BOC's tendency to write quirky songs, from the title tracks's refrain of love lost to the strangely surreal Joan Crawford (Has Risen From The Grave).
Many of the songs came about for use with the animated film (A metal of relatively high density (specific gravity greater than about 5) or of high relative atomic weight) Heavy Metal such as the song Vengeance (The Pact), however only the song Veterans Of The Psychic Wars ended up being used for the film.
