Fire Engineering - ANSWERS FROM THE ASHES
The initial point of the hand line was approximately seven feet from the fire’s edge; as the hand line progressed, the distance from the edge of the fire widened to approximately 30 feet.
In this case, the slope was steep and, therefore, the fire was burning upslope and up-canyon; the influence of the wind and slope caused it to vector across the slope.
In this case, the strategy initially was to anchor the fire from the road downslope to the river, approximately 260 feet.

Fire point - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The fire point of a fuel is the temperature at which it will continue to burn after ignition for at least 5 seconds.
At the flash point, a lower temperature, a substance will ignite, but vapor might not be produced at a rate to sustain the fire.
Industrially, fire point is the lowest temperature at which industrial greases produce sufficient vapors to form a mixture in air that continuously supports combustion after ignition.

Point shooting - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Point Shooting is a method of shooting a firearm that relies on a shooter's instinctive reactions and kinematics to quickly engage close targets.
While Applegate did cover firing handguns from the hip--from a position he called the "1/2 hip" position--he was careful to point out that this method only worked on targets at the same level as the shooter, and only at very close range.
Point and Shoot, or PandS, is a term coined in the 1990s to describe a shooting method that dates back to at least the early 1900s.

During a fire the slight increase in pressure to the interior of the structure will ensure the fire remains burning toward the area of negative pressure outside of the building.
The only instance in which fire was dramatically pushed into these spaces was when the roof was opened and the fire now had an area of negative pressure to move into.
Fires in grain elevators or other occupancies at risk of dust explosions should be controlled using a tactic least likely to increase suspended dust.

The cone of fire is there to simulate times where the gunsight is not pointed exactly in the direction of view.
Iguana mentioned, slight cone of fire would still be needed to similulate how guns are not laser accurate, as well as a strong cone for people who are moving.
I agree with LG (oh noes...) and flyingdebris: we need a tiny cone of fire to simulate weapons' inevitable inaccuracy (they're no laser guns) and loads of recoil, both depending on the weapon and the position of the shooter.
