Fire ship A vessel of any sort, set on fire and sent into an anchorage with the aim of causing consternation and destruction.
Before mechanisation, merchant ships always used sail, but as long as naval warfare depended on ships closing to ram or to fight hand-to-hand, galleys dominated in marine conflicts because of their maneuverability and speed.

Fire was a devastating weapon against wooden ships, and the enemies of the Byzantines could not stand up to fire ships spraying Greek fire.
Wooden ships sealed with pitch and outfitted with flammable rigging and equipment were at great risk of fire and explosion (once gunpowder was aboard).

Other tactics were to fire at the ships boats and other vessels in the vicinity so that the crew could not escape and therefore might decide not to ignite the ship, or to wait until the fireship had been abandoned and then tow it aside with small maneouverable vessels, such as galleys.
Ships used as fire ships were old and worn out or inexpensive vessels.
A fire ship was a ship that is filled with combustibles, deliberately set on fire and steered (or, if possible, allowed to drift) into an enemy fleet in order to destroy ships or create panic and make them break formation.

CYNICS CORNER RATING: 8.3 (B) : It is my opinion that every episode of Babylon 5 should feature a shot of Londo looking into the skies of Centauri Prime and seeing a fleet of ships; Centauri ships, Shadow ships, Narn ships, garbage scows, it doesn't matter.
So are all these folks, including the "Shadow Surgeons" and the Keepers, Drakhs, or are some of them Drakhs and some of them lackeys (lackeys of lackeys, as it were)?

Greek fire - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
However, Greek fire was very hard to control, and it would often accidentally set Byzantine ships ablaze.
Greek fire (also called Byzantine fire, wildfire and liquid fire, Greek Υγρό Πυρ, igró pir) was a weapon used by the Byzantine Empire, said to have been invented by a Syrian Christian refugee named Kallinikos (Callinicus) of Heliopolis (Syria), probably about 673.
It was known to the Byzantines' enemies as a "wet, dark, sticky fire" because it stuck to the unfortunate object it hit and was impossible to extinguish.
