Topic: Fire support base

Fire Support Bases "Coral" and "Balmoral", Vietnam [Australian War Memorial]
Several fire support bases (FSBs) were established to provide defended firing points for artillery and mortars which would cover foot patrols to be sent out by the battalions (1 and 3 RAR).
The base was now defended by armoured personnel carriers of A Squadron, 3rd Cavalry Regiment, and 1RAR's rifle companies, all of which were heavily engaged; part of the A Company position was occupied for a period, but the enemy was forced to withdraw.

Fire Support Base BEAUREGARD, located 12 kilometers to the west, provided supporting fire west of BURT in an attempt to prevent the enemy from reinforcing or withdrawing in that direction.
The fires of the artillery gunships and tac air disrupted the Viet Cong attack: by 0600 contact was broken and 400 enemy lay dead in and around the base.
In addition to maintaining a constant stream of both direct and indirect fire, artillery personnel cut out hasty landing zones for resupply aircraft and broke out and distributed over 1,500 rounds of artillery and mortar ammunition and 200,000 rounds of small-arms ammunition, all during the hours of darkness and in the heat of battle.

FSB Airborne is located on the eastern lip of the A Shau Valley on the north end of a long ridge running parallel to the valley.
The vegetation in the immediate vicinity of the fire base was destroyed, but the rain forest is only two to three meters from the wire, partially thinned due to air strikes and artillery, but still very thick.
The fire base is layed out in the shape of a shoe sole with a detached mortar position on the small knoll to the east.

Simply stated, the solution was the fire support base (FSB), a rapidly constructed artillery position occupied by air-delivered artillery pieces and defended by a minimum of infantry.
FSBs were normally occupied only as long as the maneuver elements were within range of the friendly artillery firing fan.
As the ground forces maneuvered out of their range, new fire support bases were constructed, and the artillery was moved to the new locations to continue to provide fire support to the maneuver elements.

Fire Support Base Ziggie, perhaps the most elaborate fire support base to be constructed by Australians during their involvement in South Vietnam, was finally closed on 24 August after some four months of occupation by Headquarters 3 RAR and elements of A Field Battery 12 Field Regiment.
B Company, supported by armoured personnel carriers, pressed home the attack only to find that the airstrike had not been on target and that the enemy, who were in occupation at the time of the strike, had fled to the north, thus avoiding both the artillery and the attacking ground forces.

FIRE SUPPORT BASES   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
Conceptually, the fire support base functioned simply to provide a secure but mobile artillery position capable of rendering fire support to infantry operating in areas beyond the normal range of their main base camp cannon and howitzers.
The typical cavalry fire support base was a defensive area roughly 250 yards in diameter with an 800-yard perimeter, which contained howitzers and enough equipment and supplies to support the infantry with artillery fire around the clock.
The 1st Cavalry Division's fire support bases were another example of adopting traditional frontier cavalry forts to the Vietnam environment, fusing airmobility to enhance the process.

Normally a small detachment of engineers does remain on the FSB to assist in further developing the position through the installation of airfield matting on the LZ's, additional tree cutting on the periphery to ensure that fire is not masked, & various tasks of this nature.
